Deuteronomy 1,2; Mark 12

Giving Until It Hurts

Scripture

Mark 12

41 Jesus sat down opposite the place where the offerings were put and watched the crowd putting their money into the temple treasury. Many rich people threw in large amounts. 42 But a poor widow came and put in two very small copper coins, worth only a few cents.

43 Calling his disciples to him, Jesus said, “Truly I tell you, this poor widow has put more into the treasury than all the others. 44 They all gave out of their wealth; but she, out of her poverty, put in everything—all she had to live on.”

Observation

If you and I were to be very honest about what the amount of money we give as our tithe we would have to admit that we give out of our wealth. This widow gave out of her poverty – what does that mean? It means that she gave way over a tithe. She gave so much that after she had given she had nothing left.

How many of us have ever gone to church and left everything we own as an offering to the Lord? Have we ever given a huge part of our paycheck - giving more of our paycheck than what we brought back home.

What the widow with the two coins did that day was amazing! She gave everything to the Lord. It is important to realize that Jesus took notice of how she sacrificially gave. The lesson is that He will take notice of us too if we begin to sacrificially give!  This widow was blessed and you and I will be blessed too if we give until it hurts!

Application

I want to give more and I want to worry less about how I am going to make it!

Prayer

Heavenly Father, You model generosity to us. You have given us everything. What we give to you is always an indicator of our faith in who you are and our faith in your promise to take care of us. Increase our faith in you so we can give more and we can give sacrificially.
