Open The Mouth Of The First Fish You Catch, And You Will Find A Large Silver Coin. Take It And Pay The Tax For Both Of Us.
Open
The Mouth Of The First Fish You Catch,
And
You Will Find A Large Silver Coin.
Take
It And Pay The Tax For Both Of Us.
Scripture
Matthew
17
24 On
their arrival in Capernaum, the collectors of the Temple tax came to
Peter and asked him, “Doesn’t your teacher pay the Temple tax?”
25 “Yes,
he does,” Peter replied. Then he went into the house.
But
before he had a chance to speak, Jesus asked him, “What do you
think, Peter? Do kings tax their own people or the people they have
conquered?”
26 “They
tax the people they have conquered,” Peter replied.
“Well,
then,” Jesus said, “the citizens are free!
27 However,
we don’t want to offend them, so go down to the lake and throw in a
line. Open the mouth of the first fish you catch, and you will find a
large silver coin. Take it and pay the tax for both of us.”
Observation
I
don't know about you but I love to hear my friends “fish stories”.
Friends like Mike Renner, Orville Renner, Bobby Baker, and Hugh
Roberts (just to name a few) love to tell their fish stories.
Some
of the most interesting stories are about the ones that are able to
get away! It is amazing how much bigger those fish tend to get every
time the story is retold!
Well
my friends might be able to tell some really good fish stories but
none of them can top the fish story that fisherman Simon Peter would
be able to tell about catching the fish with the large coin in its
mouth.
So
what is my take away from this fish story?
For
me it is this:
God
has millions and millions of ways to meet Eddy's needs. And just like
Simon Peter all I need to do is to be obedient to what He tells me to
do every single day.
Jesus
could have just produced the coin and handed it to Simon Peter, but
He didn't do that. No, He required obedience. And He requires the
same thing from me today!
Matthew
6:33
33 Seek
the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and he will
give you everything you need.
Application
I
will listen to the Lord today and I will strive to walk in obedience.
How
about you? What is the Lord telling you to do today?
Exodus
20:6
6
But I lavish unfailing love for a thousand generations on those who
love me and obey my
commands.
Joshua
1:7-8
7
Be strong and
very courageous. Be careful to obey all
the instructions Moses gave you. Do not deviate from them, turning
either to the right or to the left. Then you will be successful in
everything you do.
8
Study this
Book of Instruction continually. Meditate on it day and night so you
will be sure to obey everything
written in it. Only then will you prosper and succeed in all you do.
Prayer
Heavenly
Father, I pray that You bless those men that I mentioned in this
blog. Bless their family's too. Each one of them has had an impact on
my life. You brought them into my life to make me a better person.
And I could have added many more men to the list. Help me to walk in
obedience today. As I struggle with my emotions and with my thoughts
I pray that through it all I would be pleasing to You.
I have to
admit that I am very tired of all of this “sheltering in” and I
am more than ready to get back to something closer to what I consider
“normal”. I pray and I ask You to stop this plague. Help us to
learn the lessons from this experience so it will end. You are
All-Powerful. Nothing is too hard for You!

How Precious Are Your Thoughts About Me, O God. They Cannot Be Numbered!
How
Precious Are Your Thoughts About Me,
O
God.
They
Cannot Be Numbered!
Scripture
Psalm
139
18 I
can’t even count them;
they outnumber the grains of sand!
And when I wake up,
you are still with me!
they outnumber the grains of sand!
And when I wake up,
you are still with me!
Observation
I
was so glad when I saw that Psalm 139 was in today's daily Bible
reading! What a great Psalm! Need encouragement? Need a lift this
morning? Read Psalm 139! It will only take you a minute.
To
think that the Creator God, the One who made heaven and earth is
actually thinking about little old me. There are lots of important
people in this world, yet God still takes time to think about me and
His thoughts about me cannot even be numbered.
Now
I have the best wife in the world (sorry to all of you other guys out
there) and she hopefully thinks about me a lot just as I think about
her a lot, but I don't think this even compares to how much my
Heavenly Father thinks about both of us!
God loved us so much that He
left Heaven and came down to this earth to die for us on a cross. As
sinful and rotten as I am He still died for me and He thinks about me
constantly. And His thoughts for me, they outnumber the grains of
sand!
Take
a minute and read Psalm 139 and let God encourage your heart today!
Here
it is!
Psalm
139
1 O Lord,
you have examined my heart and know everything about me.
12
but even in darkness I cannot hide from you. To you the night shines
as bright as day. Darkness and light are the same to you.
14 Thank you
for making me so wonderfully complex! Your workmanship is
marvelous—how well I know it.
15 You
watched me as I was being formed in utter seclusion, as I was woven
together in the dark of the womb.
16 You saw
me before I was born. Every day of my life was recorded in your book.
Every moment was laid out before a single day had passed.
18 I
can’t even count them; they outnumber the grains of sand! And when
I wake up, you are still with me!
Application
I
am humbled when I think that God loves me enough to even think about
me. I am overwhelmed when I think that He is constantly thinking
about me. He knew me before I was even born. He knows my thoughts
even before I think them and yet He still loves me. Amazing!
How
about you? Has it dawned on you yet just
how much God loves you?
Romans
5:8
8 But
God showed his great love for us by sending Christ to die for us
while we were still sinners.
Prayer
Heavenly
Father, thank You for thinking about me. Your love for me is
overwhelming. I don't deserve it. You know everything about me and
yet You still love me and think about me all the time. You are
amazing.
I
pray for any person who doesn't feel like You love them. I know some
people who think that the bad things that happen to them in life is
because You are being mean to them. They don't understand at all what
a loving Heavenly Father You are. Soften their hearts, Lord. Soften
their hearts.

Praise The Lord; Praise God Our Savior! For Each Day He Carries Us In His Arms. Our God Is A God Who Saves!
Praise
The Lord; Praise God Our Savior!
For
Each Day He Carries Us In His Arms.
Our
God Is A God Who Saves!
Scripture
Psalm
68
Observation
Don't
think for a minute that we are going through this crisis alone. Psalm
68:19 reminds me that I am not alone and this verse lets me know
exactly who is taking care of me. That's right, my God ... my
Heavenly Father, is carrying me in His arms. “Our God is a God who
saves! The Sovereign Lord rescues us from death.”
I
was listening to my good friend Pastor Saul Mateos last night via
Facebook as he shared a message to his church family at First Baptist
Church of Puebla in the city of Puebla, Mexico.
His
message was about Moses. He said that Moses was rescued by Pharaoh’s
daughter so that later Moses could rescue the Hebrew
children out of slavery. He was rescued so that he could rescue. You
and I (if you are a follower of Jesus Christ) have been rescued so we
can rescue others!
Look
around. Who needs our help? People need to be encouraged now more
than ever.
We
are all getting weary. We all need a gentle reminder that our
Heavenly Father is carrying us in His arms! He's got this!
Galatians
6:9-10
9 So
let’s not get tired of doing what is good. At just the right time
we will reap a harvest of blessing if we don’t give up.
10 Therefore,
whenever we have the opportunity, we should do good to
everyone—especially to those in the family of faith.
Hebrews
10:24
24 Let
us think of ways to motivate one another to acts of love and good
works.
Application
I
will look for opportunities to do good. I will thank the Lord for
carrying me in His arms through this crisis.
How
about you?
Prayer
Heavenly
Father, everyday is a new day. This is a day that You have made! I
will rejoice and be glad in it! Show me how to live out this day in a
way that pleases You. Don't let me waste it! Thank You for carrying
me in Your arms through this difficult time. I am safe in the shelter
of Your wings. Thank You for all of Your promises that remind me just
how much You love me and care for me.
I
pray for any person who may be reading this blog today who is
stressed out over this situation. Comfort them, Lord. Encourage them.
Send people their way who can brighten up their day.
I
pray for Pastor Saul Mateos and his wife Raquel. Bless them, Lord.
Encourage them today.

“Take Courage! I Am. Don't Be Afraid.”
“Take
Courage!
I
Am.
Don't
Be Afraid.”
Scripture
Matthew
14
24
Meanwhile, the disciples were in trouble far away from land, for a
strong wind had risen, and they were fighting heavy waves.
26 When
the disciples saw him walking on the water, they were terrified. In
their fear, they cried out, “It’s a ghost!”
28 Then
Peter called to him, “Lord, if it’s really you, tell me to come
to you, walking on the water.”
29 “Yes,
come,” Jesus said. So
Peter went over the side of the boat and walked on the water toward
Jesus.
30 But
when he saw the strong wind and the waves, he was terrified and began
to sink. “Save me, Lord!” he shouted.
31 Jesus
immediately reached out and grabbed him. “You have so little
faith,” Jesus said. “Why did you doubt me?”
Matthew
14:27
But
immediately, Yeshua spoke
to them, saying, “Take courage! I am. Don’t be afraid.”
TLV
Observation
Jesus
was not just a good man. He was not just a good teacher and He was
not just a good philosopher. Jesus was and He still is the Great I
AM. He was and He is God Incarnate, God in the Flesh!
This
storm that He allowed his disciples to go through was to show them
just Who He was! When He showed up that night walking on the water,
He said to His disciples, “Take courage! I Am is here. Don't be
afraid.”
Do
you remember when Moses was going to rescue the Hebrew children and
Moses asked God how will they know that You have sent me and God said
to Moses, “I
am who I am. Say this to the people of Israel: I am has sent me to
you.” (Exodus 3:14)
Jesus
declared His Deity that night when He said, “Take Courage! I Am is
here. Don't be afraid.”
I
Am is here with us today in this storm, in our present crisis! Take
Courage! Don't be afraid.
Application
I
will look up the passages where Jesus declared, “I Am” so I will
be encouraged and strengthened today!
How
about you? Do you need to be encouraged?
“I
am the bread of life. He who comes to Me shall never hunger” (John
6:35).
“I
am the light of the world” (John 8:12).
“I
am the door” (John 10:9).
“I
am the true vine” (John 15:1).
“I
am the good shepherd. The good shepherd gives His life for the sheep”
(John 10:11).
“I
am the resurrection and the life”
(John
11:25).
“I
am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father
except through Me” (John 14:6).
Prayer
Heavenly
Father, thank You for leaving Heaven and coming down to this earth to
take on human flesh as Jesus Christ. I know that the Great I Am is
still in control of things today. Even when things seem completely
out of control they are not out of Your control. The disciples were
afraid that night because they were caught in a storm and because
they saw Jesus walking on water. Help me not to be afraid. Help me to
trust You. You are the only One who can calm the stormy sea. You are
the One, the only One, who can put an end to this pandemic, to this
worldwide plague. I look to You for help.

There is no greater love than to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.
There
is no greater love
than
to
lay down one’s life for one’s friends.
Scripture
John
15
10 When
you obey my commandments, you remain in my love, just as I obey my
Father’s commandments and remain in his love.
11 I
have told you these things so that you will be filled with my joy.
Yes, your joy will overflow!
Observation
This
passage is today's Sunday School lesson that normally we would be
going over at church, but today in a few minutes, my very good friend
Orville Renner will be leading our group today online via Google
Hangout!
Kathy
was reading yesterday preparing for today's Sunday School lesson and
she came to me with the Sunday School Study Guide in her hand and she
said, “I want to read this to you.”
Kathy
read out loud to me,
“Jesus
did not leave the command to love nebulous or vague. He directed us
to love people in the specific way He loved. How did Jesus show His
love? He gave. He forgave. He pardoned. He was gracious, kind,
merciful, sacrificial, and intentional. When you love people as Jesus
does, you begin to break down their defenses. The spark of relational
love is found in unforseen moments of love.”
Then
she said, “This is what we have to do with “_________” . She
was talking about someone in our family who has been so hard for us
to have a good relationship with. This person has been so hard for us
to win over with our love. She said, “We just have to figure out
how to show this person how much we love him.”
We
are not going to give up!
Maybe
you have some difficult people in your life too! I hope John 15:9-14
encourages you not to give up on loving them!
Dr.
Waylon B. Moore calls these difficult people that God places or
allows in our lives, “Spiritual Sandpaper”. God will use them to
work on us to make us more like His Son Jesus Christ!
Application
I
will continue to pray for this person, and I will continue asking God
to show us how to express our love towards this person.
How
about you? Do you have any Spiritual Sandpaper People in your life?
Prayer
Heavenly
Father, You have shown us how to love unconditionally. Help me to do
just that. Show me how to love difficult people. Don't let me give up
on them. Give me the capacity to love them even when they act like
they don't care for me and when they act like I am a bother to them.
Don't let me ever give up.
I
pray for any person reading this blog today who feels unloved. Wrap
Your arms around them today. May they sense Your love. Encourage them
today, Lord. Bring people into their life who will love them
unconditionally!

But If You Remain In Me And My Words Remain In You, You May Ask For Anything You Want, And It Will Be Granted!
But
If You Remain In Me And My Words Remain In You,
You
May Ask For Anything You Want,
And
It Will Be Granted!
Scripture
John
15
7 But
if you remain in me and my words remain in you, you may ask for
anything you want, and it will be granted!
Observation
It
shouldn't come as a surprise to me that so many of the nurses that I
meet and talk to at the hospital are followers of Jesus Christ. But
every once in a while I run into one that may not as yet seen the
light.
I
asked several nurses at a nurse's station if I could pray for them
and one of the nurses made a face along with some kind of noise like
a grunt or a sigh. It caught my attention and so I asked her, “You
don't believe in prayer?” To which she replied something like, “I
don't pray I usually just cry out!”
The
very moment she said that, before I had a chance to say anything or
even begin to pray there came a voice over the loud speaker
requesting that the rapid response team go immediately to a certain
room on a different floor of the hospital and so off she went. I
yelled out to her … and we are going to pray for you too!
I
say to you and I would have said to her, that I am living proof that
God answers the prayers of his people.
It
is why I love to go to the hospital and talk to patients and I love
to pray with them. Nothing is more important.
I
brag on all the people that prayed for me every chance I get. I still
am overwhelmed with emotion any time I think about how they prayed
for me and they did not give up.
Against
all odds they prayed and they didn't give up. Tears fill my eyes
right now just thinking about what God did because people (many of
you) prayed for me.
The
odds were greater than 95% that I would not survive, the surgeon told
Kathy, “Your husband has less than a 5% chance of surviving from
the operating room up to Intensive Care. He even told his Nurse
Practitioner (who told me a few weeks later) that the surgeon thought
that I would not survive!
At
one time they had 17 drips going into me and had pumped (or dripped)
100 pounds of fluids into me trying to save my life. Everyone who saw
me said that I looked like I was about to “pop” and that I looked
like a “Blimp”. At one point I weighed an unbelievable 289 pounds
… l00 pounds of fluids!
John
15:7 is not a magical formula; it is not meant for us to believe that
we can just name it and claim it. It is all about us having a
relationship that is so close to Jesus that what is on His heart is
also on our heart. And so that when we pray we are praying what is on
the heart of God.
Does
that make sense?
Application
When
I pray, I will pray knowing that God wants me to pray and He wants to
answer my prayers!
How
about you?
James
5:16
16 Confess
your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be
healed. The earnest prayer of a righteous person has great power and
produces wonderful results.
Matthew
21
21 Then
Jesus told them, “I tell you the truth, if you have faith and
don’t doubt, you can do things like this and much more. You can
even say to this mountain, ‘May you be lifted up and thrown into
the sea,’ and it will happen.
Prayer
Heavenly
Father, teach me how to pray. Show me what is on Your heart. Nothing
is too hard for You. What we call miracles are just Your hands at
work. Every day is a miracle. Help me to take advantage of every day
and not waste them on things that don't matter.
I
pray for Kathy Renner today. I pray for healing. I pray for her
husband Don and for their kids and grandkids as they anxiously wait
for Kathy's return home from the hospital.

12:5

while Peter was in prison, the church prayed very

“Come

Scripture
Matthew
11
28 Then
Jesus said, “Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry
heavy burdens, and I will give you rest.
29 Take
my yoke upon you. Let me teach you, because I am humble and gentle at
heart, and you will find rest for your souls.
Observation
Weary
… does that describe how you feel these days? It describes the way
I feel this morning. I am ready for all of this to go away! We
desperately need the light that can be seen at the end of the tunnel!
Jesus
is saying to me and you morning, “Come to me, I know that you are
weary and I know that you are carrying heavy burdens, come to me and
I will give you rest.”
You
and I were never designed to live in this crazy, dangerous, chaotic
world on our own. We were created by God to be dependent on Him.
A
few minutes ago Kathy and I were awakened by a tornado alert on both
of our cell phones saying take cover in the safest room of your
house! Now that is a great way to start one's day – immediately I
prayed, “Lord, keep us safe!” I am so glad that I have a Heavenly
Father who I can call on in times of trouble.
In
these troublesome times it is great to know that Jesus has conquered
this evil and chaotic world!
Application
I
will quickly call on the Lord when I am in trouble, when I am tired
and weary, and when my burdens become too heavy.
How
about you?
Prayer
Heavenly
Father, trouble seems to be everywhere right now. I am weary and I am
tired of all of this coronavirus stuff. Even our weather is totally

29 What
is the price of two sparrows—one copper coin? But not a single

Observation
This
coronavirus is an enemy, an worse it is an invisible enemy and it
doesn't seem to discriminate. When you go out to the store, when you
stop to get gas at the gas station, or when you go to work, you never
know if you are bringing the plague back home with you. It is an
eerie feeling. … Isn't it?
I
am glad that I have a Heavenly Father. I have been adopted into His
forever family. Nothing touches my life without His permission. He is
taking care of me. He even knows the exact number of hairs that I
still have left on my balding head!
I

Prayer
Heavenly

destruction but because of Your grace and mercy I know that I am not
going to get what I deserve and instead I am going to live forever
with You.
I
am not afraid of this invisible enemy because greater is He that is

because we are Your kids. You chose us and You have adopted us into
Your family. We are safe in the shelter of Your wings!
I
pray for any person who may read this blog who has never called on
You for salvation. Open up their spiritual heart. Help them to place

Follow Me And Be My Disciple.
Follow
Me
And
Be
My Disciple.
Scripture
Matthew
9
9 As
Jesus was walking along, he saw a man named Matthew sitting at his
tax collector’s booth. “Follow me and be my disciple,” Jesus
said to him. So Matthew got up and followed him.
10 Later,
Matthew invited Jesus and his disciples to his home as dinner guests,
along with many tax collectors and other disreputable sinners.
11 But
when the Pharisees saw this, they asked his disciples, “Why does
your teacher eat with such scum?”
13 Then
he added, “Now go and learn the meaning of this Scripture: ‘I
want you to show mercy, not offer sacrifices.’ For I have come to
call not those who think they are righteous, but those who know they
are sinners.”
Observation
Follow
me and be my disciple. It is what Jesus Christ is asking us to do.
Are you a follower of Jesus Christ? Right now He is speaking to you
saying, “Follow me and be my disciple.”
To
many this is not a new invitation, maybe you have been saying “no”
to Jesus for years. Now is the time to say “yes” and follow Him.
You
are never too old to say “yes” to Him. Kathy's Dad, Clayton
Bearden, was 67 years old when he finally said “yes” and became a
follower of Jesus Christ.
My
good friends Jack Roush and Aaron Myers were both in their fifties
when they finally said “yes” and became followers of Jesus
Christ. It is hearing their stories that gives me hope for some of
you!
Matthew
was a tax collector. He was a sinner for sure. People hated tax
collectors because they were so dishonest and cruel. Jesus didn't
call Matthew to follow Him because Matthew was a good person. Matthew
was a rotten sinner just like you and just like me.
When
Jesus called me to follow Him I was nineteen years old. And it was
not because I was a good person. When God extended the call for me to
follow Him it was not because of anything about me that was good.
If
Jesus is speaking to you and asking you to follow Him, then please
say, Yes! I am praying that you will say, YES!
Application
I
will keep praying for people that are still saying “no” to
following Jesus!
How
about you? Have you said “Yes” to Jesus?
Prayer
Heavenly
Father, thank You for not giving up on me. Thank You for sending
someone into my life who challenged me to follow Jesus. It was not my
idea to start following You. You worked in my life and changed the
direction of my life and I know that You can do the same thing for
those who I am praying for. Nothing is too hard for you!
