To Have Self-control Than To Conquer A City.

Proverbs 16

32 Better to be patient than powerful;
better to have self-control than to conquer a city.

Observation

As I read this morning this verse jumped out at me … probably because I need work in both of these areas: Patience and Self-control! I have been called by some people very very close to me, “Chief hurry up and wait!”

Proverbs 16:32 tells us just how important it is for us to have both patience and self-control.

As I was reading and looking up verses on patience and self-control I discovered Titus 2:2 and it says that self-control or at least putting self-control into practice is something that can be learned.

So there is hope for all of us!

Have you realized that there are some things that you just cannot fix?

There are things that are beyond our control. I have some relationships in my life right now that are in desperate need of being mended, but at the moment I can't fix them.

I have to be patient. I have to practice self-control and I have to wait for God to work.

For you maybe it is not a relationship problem, maybe it is your health or maybe it is the health of a loved one. You can't fix it.

You too have to be patient and wait for God to work.

Galatians 5:22-23

But the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. There is no law against these things!

Proverbs 25:28

A person without self-control is like a city with broken-down walls.

Titus 2:2

Teach the older men to exercise self-control, to be worthy of respect, and to live wisely. They must have sound faith and be filled with love and patience.

Application

I will practice patience. I will practice self-control in the areas of my life that are beyond my ability to fix! How about you?

Prayer

Heavenly Father, as I read these verses and the other passages from Your Word this morning I was once again reminded that You are constantly working in my life and You are also constantly working in the lives of those around me. You never stop. Help me to trust You with the relationships that I can't seem to fix. Help those who I pray for that are sick. I can't fix them. Only You can heal them. Help me to see beyond my circumstances. Help me to see things from Your perspective. I promise that I will keep on praying to You and I will never give up.

Observation

Has there ever been a time in your life when you prayed and surrendered your life to the Lord Jesus Christ?

You and I have a choice once we hear that Jesus came to this Earth to save us; we can either choose to live for him or we can reject His claim on our life and we can live life for ourselves.

So let me ask you, have you ever given Jesus your life?

How do we do that? We pray and we ask Jesus to forgive us of our sins. We ask Him to come into our lives and we allow Him to take control.

There is a void in your life and in my life that only Jesus can fill. Neither drugs, alcohol, sex, money, power, fame or anything else can fill that void in our lives.

I was 19 years old when someone told me about Jesus and gave my life to Him. It was the best decision that I ever made.

Have you made that decision yet?

It is a simple prayer: “Lord Jesus: I know that I am a sinner. I know that You died on the cross to pay the penalty for my sins. Come into my life and save me. I give you my life.”

But just mouthing those words won't automatically save you any more than pushing a wheelbarrow into a garage makes it a car, but I know from personal experience that praying those words with a sincere and repentant heart will make an eternal, life changing difference in your life and your life will never be the same!

Application

I will look for opportunities to share this Good News about Jesus Christ with someone this week.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, I pray today for any person reading this blog who may still be trying to live his or her life without a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. Open up his or her spiritual heart. Help them to believe in You. I pray that they will surrender and give their lives to You today.

I pray for those who must make very difficult decisions today about their loved ones. Give them strength. Give them peace in the midst of their grief.

I pray for my family. I would love to see them all walking with You. You know that it is my biggest request. I will never give up praying on their behalf.

Nothing is too hard for You!

Observation

Men, today is the day for us to shine!

So hopefully, if you are a guy, you at least remembered that today is Valentine's Day. Our ladies are expecting us to pay extra attention to them today … lets not disappoint them!

We don't have to spend lots of money on them to “Wow” them, but we do have to give them our undivided attention and show them that no one else in this world means as much to us as they do.

If you do that today then you have done well! Love ... God's love ... Agape love, the love that is described in 1 Corinthians 13, is the only kind of love that will sustain a relationship. It is the only kind of love that will make your marriage great!

If you are a woman and you have a man that maybe is not smart enough yet to know how to “wow” you, then I suggest that instead of pouting today and being miserable, why not take advantage of today and “wow” him. Show him how it is done. Show him what Agape love, looks like!

I will think about 1 Corinthians13:4-7,13 today and I will try to make this day special for my wife.

Heavenly Father, You have given me the best wife in the world. You could not have given me anyone any better. I am so glad that you brought Kathy into my life. Help me to love her with godly love. Show me how to meet her needs. Bless her, Lord. May Your face shine brightly on her today.

I pray for any person that may be reading this blog that is struggling with a relationship. Help them to show the other person agape love and help them to never give up.

I pray for those who are sick, or who have loved ones who are sick, and I pray for those who are grieving because they have lost a loved one. Give them strength.

Acts 20

7 On the first day of the week, we gathered with the local believers to share in the Lord’s Supper. Paul was preaching to them, and since he was leaving the next day, he kept talking until midnight. 8 The upstairs room where we met was lighted with many flickering lamps. 

9 As Paul spoke on and on, a young man named Eutychus, sitting on the windowsill, became very drowsy. Finally, he fell sound asleep and dropped three stories to his death below. 10 Paul went down, bent over him, and took him into his arms. “Don’t worry,” he said, “he’s alive!” 

11 Then they all went back upstairs, shared in the Lord’s Supper, and ate together. Paul continued talking to them until dawn, and then he left. 12 Meanwhile, the young man was taken home alive and well, and everyone was greatly relieved.

Observation

I think that Luke, who wrote this account in the book of Acts, might have been gently pointing out that his dear friend Paul was at times a little long winded, and that his preaching sometimes put people to sleep.

I don't know. But I do know that God certainly does have a sense of humor. How do I know? I know He does because He uses people like me and people like you to do His work here on Earth.

The Apostle Paul was human … he was human just like you and me.

So one word to all of us preachers, maybe this could be a gentle reminder.

The Apostle Paul killed someone with his long preaching, but he was able to bring him back to life, the people we might kill with our long preaching probably won't be so fortunate.

Application

As I read the stories that God has placed in the Bible I will look for the ways that God wants me to apply them to my life.

Heavenly Father, thank You for allowing us to serve You, by serving the people around us. For You to choose to use me is proof beyond any doubt that You most certainly do have a sense of humor.

I pray for my fellow pastors today. Bless them and bless their families.

I pray for the sick and I pray for those who have loved ones who are sick. Give them strength. And I pray for healing.

Guide me today. Help me do the things that You want me to do, the things that are on Your heart. You are the Mighty God. Nothing is too hard for You.

But Life Is Worth Nothing
Unless I Use It
For Doing The Work Assigned Me By The Lord Jesus –

Acts 20

24 But life is worth nothing unless I use it for doing the work assigned me by the Lord Jesus—the work of telling others the Good News about God’s mighty kindness and love.

Observation

Are we being obedient? Are you and I doing the work assigned to us by the Lord Jesus Christ?

No matter what condition life finds us in right now, no matter how beat up we are, no matter how worn out we are, no matter how sick we are, or how old we are, we can still live our lives for Jesus Christ and we can serve Him with all of our heart!

We have no excuse!

True, we are not all evangelists like the Apostle Paul, but each of us has God’s calling on our lives.

The question is this: are you and I fulfilling that calling? God has equipped you and He has equipped me for a special work. Are we doing it?

Life is worth nothing unless we do the work that God has assigned for us to do?

Don’t know or not sure what that work is? Need direction right now for your life?

Okay fair enough, here is the solution; Dig into God’s Word and spend time with Him, and be willing to say Yes to Him when He tells you what to do! And yes, it is as simple as that!

Proverbs 3:5-6 and Psalm 119:105 come to my mind, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding. Seek his will in all you do, and he will direct your paths. “ “Your word is a lamp for my feet and a light for my path.”

Application

I will put Proverbs 3:5-6 into practice this week. How about you?

Heavenly Father, my life is worth nothing unless I use it for doing the work assigned to me by the Lord Jesus—the work of telling others the Good News about Your mighty kindness and love. Help me to trust You with all of my heart. Help me not to depend on my own understanding. I want to seek Your will in all that I do so that You will direct my path. Observation

Wouldn't this be a great verse for our kids and youth to learn at church and what if they were actually taught to put this verse into practice?

When I saw this verse I thought about two men in our church who do get and deserve a tremendous amount of respect and admiration: Dr. Waylon B. Moore and Jerry McGowan.

Dr. Moore is 91 years old and I think Jerry is just a tad bit younger!

Dr. Moore, since he is one of our pastors is well known and still preaches quite often at our church and at other churches when asked.

Both of these men have a tremendous love for the Lord and have been able to serve the Lord all of these years wholeheartedly. I will gladly stand up in their presence.

We have some wonderful folks who are in the upper 70's and in their 80's that are still actively serving the Lord in our church.

When we see them lets take time to greet them and give them some well deserved hugs.

Who do we know that is now a bit aged that could use a little encouragement, maybe a loving hug from me or a hug from you?

Look and you will find most of these 'wonderful saints' at our 9 am in worship service.

Application

I will remember to show respect for the aged.

Heavenly Father, in a blink of an eye I will be among the elderly and the aged. In fact, most people might put me in that group right now. I agree with Jerry McGowan. He told me the other day that he never plans to get old. And I know just what he means. When we start acting old that is when old age has arrived. 

I pray for our elderly. Give them strength and good health. Help them to not give up even when they hurt and when they don't feel like coming to church. Let their hearts bring them to church, Lord, when their bodies are saying no! 

I pray for our young church. Help our young people realize the value of our older adults.

Observation

“But I am trusting you, O Lord, saying, “You are my God!” (Psalm 31:14) There are times in our lives when that is all we will be able to say because we have been crushed by life's cruel circumstances.

Yesterday, you probably didn't notice, but I did not have the opportunity to write my daily blog. No time to write it because A dear friend of ours called me early Sunday morning to let me know that her father had been taken to the hospital after suffering an apparent heart attack.

Then while I was at the hospital room talking to our friend I received a call and it was another friend's wife. She told me that her husband, who I went to school with, Marshall Harrington, who I had just visited Saturday in the hospital and was doing well and was waiting to receive another stent in his heart, had suffered a massive heart attack during the night and the hospital staff was not able to save his life.

So this morning the Psalm 31:24 “So be strong and courageous, all you who put your hope in the Lord!” jumped out at me as I thought about my friends.

This verse is for all of us, And it is especially meaningful for when we go through times of loss.

Joshua 1:9

This is my command—be strong and courageous! Do not be afraid or discouraged. For the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.”

Daniel 10:19a

“Don’t be afraid,” he said, “for you are very precious to God. Peace! Be encouraged! Be strong!”  …

1 Corinthians 16:13

Be on guard. Stand firm in the faith. Be courageous. Be strong.

Application

I will hold on to all of God's promises when I am experiencing grief and loss.

Heavenly Father, I weep with those who weep. Today as I think about my friends I can only hope that they will turn to You for their strength during these difficult days. Thank You for giving us Your Word. It is full of promises to us and I know that You will keep every single one of them. Your promises are wonderful. They give us strength. I pray for my friends who are going through difficult times. Help them to trust in You.

Acts 16

22 A mob quickly formed against Paul and Silas, and the city officials ordered them stripped and beaten with wooden rods. 23 They were severely beaten, and then they were thrown into prison. The jailer was ordered to make sure they didn’t escape. 24 So the jailer put them into the inner dungeon and clamped their feet in the stocks.

25 Around midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the other prisoners were listening.26 Suddenly, there was a massive earthquake, and the prison was shaken to its foundations. All the doors immediately flew open, and the chains of every prisoner fell off! 27 The jailer woke up to see the prison doors wide open. He assumed the prisoners had escaped, so he drew his sword to kill himself. 28 But Paul shouted to him, “Stop! Don’t kill yourself! We are all here!”

29 The jailer called for lights and ran to the dungeon and fell down trembling before Paul and Silas. 30 Then he brought them out and asked, “Sirs, what must I do to be saved?”

31 They replied, “Believe in the Lord Jesus and you will be saved, along with everyone in your household.” 32 And they shared the word of the Lord with him and with all who lived in his household. 

33 Even at that hour of the night, the jailer cared for them and washed their wounds. Then he and everyone in his household were immediately baptized. 34 He brought them into his house and set a meal before them, and he and his entire household rejoiced because they all believed in God.

Observation

Stripped, severely beaten with rods, thrown into the inner most part of the dungeon, with their feet placed in stocks, Paul and Silas began to pray and sing hymns to God. It was around midnight and all the other prisoners were listening to Paul and Silas, listening to them sing and pray.

Yes, that is truly incredible … but the story gets even better.

At around midnight during this prayer meeting God sent an earthquake that caused all the doors in the dungeon to fly open and the chains on every prisoner to fall off.

You would have thought that all the prisoners would have fled and that is what the jailer thought when he was awakened by the earthquake and saw the prison doors swinging wide open, but not one prisoner tried to escape.

The jailer called for lights and then he ran and fell down trembling before Paul and Silas and said to them, “Sirs, what must I do to be saved?” And their answer was, “Believe in the Lord Jesus and you will be saved, along with everyone in your household.”

Here is one lesson from this story: God will allow His children to go through hardship and suffering just so someone else has the opportunity to see Jesus in us. God didn't send the earthquake to free Paul and Silas. He sent an earthquake, along with the powerful witness of Paul and Silas, to set the jailer free!

Application

I will strive to look at my circumstances from God's perspective. I am His child. Nothing comes into my life, nothing touches me, that He does not allow.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, give me the ability to see Your Hand at work in my life even during the darkest times. I know that I am Your child. I have been bought with the precious blood of Jesus Christ. Nothing, absolutely nothing, touches my life without Your okay. Use my life to help someone else come to faith and trust in Jesus Christ.

I pray for those who are sick today. Give them strength and heal them.

25 Next Moses took the fat, including the fat of the broad tail, the fat around the internal organs, the long lobe of the liver, and the two kidneys and the fat around them, along with the right thigh.

Observation

Dr. Waylon B. Moore, my first pastor, years ago taught me that my Bible is a like a giant spiritual supermarket. It is filled with kinds of food like: can goods, breads, dairy products, meats and pastries.

As I read through Leviticus, the book of Leviticus is like eating some vegetables found in the can goods aisle of Publix that even though I might eat them they are not my favorites.

Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy are always a challenge for me to get through as I read the Bible through each year.

In Leviticus, God instructs His people how they were to worship Him way back then. I am glad that today our way of worship has changed, and we do not have to sacrifice animals on an altar like they did back then.

For us, Jesus Christ has made a once and for all sacrifice, His death on the cross. It was a blood sacrifice for all of my sins and for all your sins too.

All you and I just need to do is put our trust and our faith in Him.

Application

I will look for things that I haven't noticed before as I read through Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy!

Heavenly Father, I was reminded as I read in Leviticus about these animal sacrifices, what King David said in Psalm 51:16-17 “You do not desire a sacrifice, or I would offer one. You do not want a burnt offering. The sacrifice you desire is a broken spirit. You will not reject a broken and repentant heart, O God.” I know that a broken and repentant heart is the sacrifices that You desire from me. Help me to walk close to You today. I want to make You smile.

Acts 14

19 Then some Jews arrived from Antioch and Iconium and won the crowds to their side. They stoned Paul and dragged him out of town, thinking he was dead. 20 But as the believers gathered around him, he got up and went back into the town. The next day he left with Barnabas for Derbe.

Observation

In a matter of minutes the Apostle Paul and Barnabas went from being called the Greek gods Zeus and Hermes (because they had healed a cripple man, who had been crippled since birth and had never walked) to the crowd turning against them stoning Paul and leaving him for dead.

This story is a reminder to me just how fickle that we as human beings can be!

I love what Paul did in verse 20 of Acts 14, “he got up and went back into the town.” He had been stoned by the crowd, dragged out of town, and left there for dead. Can you imagine what the people thought when they saw the Apostle Paul walk right back into their town after they had just stoned him and thought he was dead?

Is it just me that thinks about stuff like that? …

Here is a take away from this story:

My pastor Dr. Waylon B. Moore told me, when I was just starting out in the ministry way back in the early 1970's, “never take a pat on the back unless it was way down low.”

Here is how I understood his words of advice, advice which has stayed with me all of these years … don't let the praise of people go to your head. If you are getting a pat on your back way down low (verbally spanked, corrected or criticized) – be sure to pay attention to that one!

The Apostle Paul and Barnabas were not about to accept the praise of men – we also need to be careful ... Let's let God and let's let those around us get the credit whenever God does something through us that is worthy of praise!

Application

I want the Apostle Paul's boldness, his humility, and his tenacity in my life.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, the Apostle Paul was so bold and so tenacious. He never gave up. I can't imagine be able to get up after being stoned by a mob and walking right back into the town where they had just stoned me and left me for dead. Give me Paul's boldness. What an amazing story. Help me to love people like Paul did. Guide me today. Don't let me miss out on what You want me to do.

I pray for those who are sick. I pray for their healing. Your Word reminds me, “The earnest prayer of a righteous person has great power and produces wonderful results.” (James 5:16b) I know that a righteous person is not someone who is perfect, because I know that there are no perfect people. I know that a righteous person is someone who is putting You first in his or her life. Help me to be a righteous person today. Please answer my prayers.

39 Everyone who believes in him is made right in God’s sight—something the law of Moses could never do. 

40 Be careful! Don’t let the prophets’ words apply to you. For they said,

41 ‘Look, you mockers,
    be amazed and die!
For I am doing something in your own day,
    something you wouldn’t believe
    even if someone told you about it.’”

Observation

If you were to tell me your life story and if I were to share with you mine, what we would both quickly discover as we listened to each others' story was the fact that we were both in desperate need of forgiveness.

Our stories, if we shared them honestly with each other, would both quickly reveal our need for a Savior.

Your life and my life is filled, yes filled, with brokenness caused by sin.

Some and probably most of the hurt, most of the brokenness and most of the chaos in our lives comes from our own sinfulness and our own selfishness, yet there are deep wounds and deep hurts and tragic losses that we live with that have been caused by the sins of others.

A few examples of the kind of brokenness that comes at the hand of someone else could be the damage done to us by an unfaithful spouse, a rebellious child, or a drunk driver. This list, of course, could easily go on and on.

Sin, my sin and your sin, impacts and destroys more than just our own lives.

No matter how good you are, and no matter how good I am, and no matter how good we live our lives in the future, we are all still far from perfect; we are broken. Jesus came to save us from the penalty of our sins. You and I are sinners. We are both in need of a Savior. Jesus came to make us right with God.

So … Do you know Him? Are you forgiven?

Romans 3:23

23 For everyone has sinned; we all fall short of God’s glorious standard.

Romans 5:8

8 But God showed his great love for us by sending Christ to die for us while we were still sinners.

Application

When I share my story I will not hide the fact that I am a sinner and I will not brag on that fact either.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, I realize that I am a sinner. I know that I am broken. Thank You for forgiving me of my sins through Your Son Jesus Christ. Help me to walk in a way today that brings You glory and honor.

I pray for any person reading this blog today who has not yet trusted In Jesus for his or her salvation. Help them to realize their brokenness today. I pray today for their salvation. Change the story of their life today.

Observation

“In my desperation I prayed, and the Lord listened”, boy, I can really identify with King David and what he writes in this Psalm!

So many times when David is writing a Psalm it is actually a prayer where he is crying out to God during a time of full blown 100% desperation.

Can you identify with him? I sure can.

Not all of my prayers are soft easy going prayers, no sir, there have been lots of times in my life when my prayers were cries of desperation just like what we read today in Psalm 34.

Take time to read the entire Psalm today. It is short. It is only twenty-two verses long.

Application

I will cry out to God in desperation because I know that He listens to me and He will save me from all my troubles.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, You know everything that is going on in my life. Nothing is a surprise to You. When I am desperate, when I have a crisis and I pray to You I know that You listen to me. And I know that You will save me from all of my troubles.

I pray for those who are very sick. I pray for a friend's daughter who is in a coma. Restore her to health. Give my friend peace in her heart, peace that can only come from You.
