Psalm 130

    Pay attention to my prayer.

3 Lord, if you kept a record of our sins,
    who, O Lord, could ever survive?

4 But you offer forgiveness,
    that we might learn to fear you.

5 I am counting on the Lord;
    yes, I am counting on him.
    I have put my hope in his word.

6 I long for the Lord
    more than sentries long for the dawn,
    yes, more than sentries long for the dawn.

Observation
Who are you counting on? In today's Bible reading I had the opportunity to read about Daniel in the Lion's den, John the Baptist, and Psalm 130. In all three places, God reinforced to me the importance of trusting and depending in Him.
So I can say with the Psalmist this morning, “I am counting on the Lord; yes, I am counting on him. I have put my hope in his word.
Who are you counting on?
Application
I will pray Psalm 130:1-6 back to the Lord.

Prayer
Heavenly Father, “From the depths of despair, O Lord, I call for your help. Hear my cry, O Lord. Pay attention to my prayer. Lord, if you kept a record of our sins, who, O Lord, could ever survive? I pray for any person that may read this simple blog today. Bless them, Lord. May Your face shine brightly on them. Show them that they can count on You for whatever is going on in his or her life. Help them to slow down and spend time with You in Your Word today.

5 He took with him Mary, to whom he was engaged, who was now expecting a child.
6 And while they were there, the time came for her baby to be born. 7 She gave birth to her firstborn son. She wrapped him snugly in strips of cloth and laid him in a manger, because there was no lodging available for them.
The Shepherds and Angels
8 That night there were shepherds staying in the fields nearby, guarding their flocks of sheep. 9 Suddenly, an angel of the Lord appeared among them, and the radiance of the Lord’s glory surrounded them. They were terrified, 
10 but the angel reassured them. “Don’t be afraid!” he said. “I bring you good news that will bring great joy to all people. 11 The Savior—yes, the Messiah, the Lord—has been born today in Bethlehem, the city of David! 12 And you will recognize him by this sign: You will find a baby wrapped snugly in strips of cloth, lying in a manger.”
13 Suddenly, the angel was joined by a vast host of others—the armies of heaven—praising God and saying,
14 “Glory to God in highest heaven,
    and peace on earth to those with whom God is pleased.”
15 When the angels had returned to heaven, the shepherds said to each other, “Let’s go to Bethlehem! Let’s see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has told us about.”
16 They hurried to the village and found Mary and Joseph. And there was the baby, lying in the manger. 17 After seeing him, the shepherds told everyone what had happened and what the angel had said to them about this child. 
18 All who heard the shepherds’ story were astonished, 19 but Mary kept all these things in her heart and thought about them often. 
20 The shepherds went back to their flocks, glorifying and praising God for all they had heard and seen. It was just as the angel had told them.
Observation
I never get tired of reading or hearing this story! What an experience it must have been for those shepherds! In just a couple of short months, we will be celebrating our Savior's birth – that's right Christmas is right around the corner!
I always look forward to the Christmas season – the lights, the sounds, the smells, the food, and the opportunity to share special moments with those who I love the most.
Even with the hustle and bustle, even with the frantic pace of trying to find something special for everyone on our shopping list, it is still the very best time of the year!
So let's get ready – Christmas will be here before you and I can blink twice!
Application
I will enjoy this Christmas. I will enjoy time with family and friends and I will celebrate my Savior's birth!

Prayer
Heavenly Father, this Christmas season don't let me miss an opportunity to share with the people around me the joy that comes from personally knowing the Christ of Christmas. I know that there is no other time during the year when people are more open to hearing about Jesus. I pray that during this Christmas season many people will open up their hearts and place their faith and trust in Jesus Christ.

Luke 1
76 “And you, my little son,
    will be called the prophet of the Most High,
    because you will prepare the way for the Lord.

77 You will tell his people how to find salvation
    through forgiveness of their sins.

Observation

In Luke 1 we read about the birth of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and we also read about the birth of His cousin John, who would become John the Baptist.
John's father was Zechariah and in Luke 1 we find Zechariah speaking prophetically about both his son John and John's cousin, Jesus Christ.
Zechariah's prophetic word in verse 77 about his son John being a witness should also ring true of us today. You and I should tell people how to find salvation through forgiveness of their sins!
Remember: It is not good people that go to Heaven and bad people that go to Hell. It is forgiven people and only forgiven people that go to Heaven.
John the Baptist was called to be a witness, a voice crying out in the desert, and you and I, if we are followers of Christ have that same calling!
Romans 10
9 If you openly declare that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 

10 For it is by believing in your heart that you are made right with God, and it is by openly declaring your faith that you are saved.

13 For “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.”

14 But how can they call on him to save them unless they believe in him? And how can they believe in him if they have never heard about him? And how can they hear about him unless someone tells them? 
15 And how will anyone go and tell them without being sent? That is why the Scriptures say, “How beautiful are the feet of messengers who bring good news!”
Application
I will share about my Savior with everyone I can!

Heavenly Father, I pray for boldness to be able to tell the people that You put in my path about Jesus. Give me love and concern for them. Don't let me miss an opportunity to be Your witness.
I pray today for those who are grieving the loss of a loved one. Surround them with Your love and Your strength. You are the God of all comfort and all compassion. Help them through this difficult time.

3 He heals the brokenhearted
    and bandages their wounds.

4 He counts the stars
    and calls them all by name.

5 How great is our Lord! His power is absolute!
    His understanding is beyond comprehension!

Observation
Physical illness is rough, but an emotionally broken heart is so much worse. I am so glad that God gave me the best wife on the planet. I couldn't imagine fussing and fighting all the time like some other couples do.
The pain I feel is usually caused by someone that we are trying to help. It breaks my heart to see people continually suffer when I know that God has something so much better for them!
But at the same time, I am always encouraged. I do see God heal marriages, restore relationships, and put lives back together again. He does bandage up the wounded! And as pastors, we have the privilege to be a small part of the healing process.
So if you are brokenhearted today I want you to know that there is hope. God is in the business of healing broken hearts. He will bandage up your wounds. All you need to do is surrender your life to Him and let Him be in control.
Matthew 11:28-30
28 Then Jesus said, “Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. 

29 Take my yoke upon you. Let me teach you, because I am humble and gentle at heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 

30 For my yoke is easy to bear, and the burden I give you is light.”
Psalm 34:18
The Lord is close to the brokenhearted; he rescues those whose spirits are crushed.
Application
I will continue to try to help people. I will never give up.

Prayer
Heavenly Father, You changed my life and so I know that You can do the same thing for those around me. Nothing is too hard for you. Every changed life is a miracle and miracles are what You do. So I pray that You bring healing to those who are struggling with health issues, or relationship issues. Bandage up their wounds. Heal their broken hearts. You, who counts the stars and calls them all by name help the person that is reading this blog today.

1 Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the old heaven and the old earth had disappeared. And the sea was also gone.
2 And I saw the holy city, the new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven like a bride beautifully dressed for her husband.
3 I heard a loud shout from the throne, saying, “Look, God’s home is now among his people! He will live with them, and they will be his people. God himself will be with them.
4 He will wipe every tear from their eyes, and there will be no more death or sorrow or crying or pain. All these things are gone forever.”
5 And the one sitting on the throne said, “Look, I am making everything new!” And then he said to me, “Write this down, for what I tell you is trustworthy and true.” 
6 And he also said, “It is finished! I am the Alpha and the Omega—the Beginning and the End. To all who are thirsty I will give freely from the springs of the water of life. 
7 All who are victorious will inherit all these blessings, and I will be their God, and they will be my children.
Observation

When will all of the hurt and pain, all of the death and sorrow end? I don't know exactly when it will end but one day Jesus is going to cry out, “It is finished! And He will wipe away every tear from our eyes and there will be no more suffering!
Someone asked me yesterday how she could get help with the pain of recently losing her father. To be honest I don't have a real good answer for her.
I know that it personally took me a long time to get over the death of my Mom. The only thing that helped me was the passing of time … with each day it gradually got a little bit easier. You, who have lost someone close to you, probably would share something similar, or might even have a better answer than mine!
The Apostle Paul experienced a lot of suffering and his words in 2 Corinthians 1 have been an encouragement to me and maybe they will help you today:
3 All praise to God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. God is our merciful Father and the source of all comfort. 
4 He comforts us in all our troubles so that we can comfort others. When they are troubled, we will be able to give them the same comfort God has given us. 
5 For the more we suffer for Christ, the more God will shower us with his comfort through Christ. 
6 Even when we are weighed down with troubles, it is for your comfort and salvation! For when we ourselves are comforted, we will certainly comfort you. Then you can patiently endure the same things we suffer. 
7 We are confident that as you share in our sufferings, you will also share in the comfort God gives us.
8 We think you ought to know, dear brothers and sisters, about the trouble we went through in the province of Asia. We were crushed and overwhelmed beyond our ability to endure, and we thought we would never live through it. 
9 In fact, we expected to die. But as a result, we stopped relying on ourselves and learned to rely only on God, who raises the dead. 
10 And he did rescue us from mortal danger, and he will rescue us again. We have placed our confidence in him, and he will continue to rescue us. 
11 And you are helping us by praying for us. Then many people will give thanks because God has graciously answered so many prayers for our safety. (2 Corinthians 1:3-11)
Application
I will comfort others with the same comfort that God has given me.

Heavenly Father, You know who is on my heart today. I pray for those who are grieving. Help them, Lord. You are the God of all comfort and all compassion. I know that You will help them through this time of grief. I pray that they will read Your Word and I pray that they will go to You in this time of need. You are the mighty God. Revelation 20
11 And I saw a great white throne and the one sitting on it. The earth and sky fled from his presence, but they found no place to hide. 

12 I saw the dead, both great and small, standing before God’s throne. And the books were opened, including the Book of Life. And the dead were judged according to what they had done, as recorded in the books. 

13 The sea gave up its dead, and death and the grave gave up their dead. And all were judged according to their deeds. 

14 Then death and the grave were thrown into the lake of fire. This lake of fire is the second death. 

15 And anyone whose name was not found recorded in the Book of Life was thrown into the lake of fire.
Psalm 145
18 The Lord is close to all who call on him,
    yes, to all who call on him in truth.

19 He grants the desires of those who fear him;
    he hears their cries for help and rescues them.

20 The Lord protects all those who love him,
    but he destroys the wicked.
Observation
Payday someday … the Lord always keeps His promises! “... The Lord always keeps his promises; he is gracious in all he does. (Psalm 145:13b)
If being thrown into a lake of fire to burn forever and ever doesn't get your attention or bother you, then how about being eternally separated from those you love.
You and I are going to live forever! We are going to live forever in either a place called Heaven or a place called Hell. It is not good people that get to go to Heaven and bad people that are sent to Hell. It is forgiven people that are allowed into Heaven.
Forgiveness is found when we place our faith and our trust in the Lord Jesus Christ and what He did for us on the cross. Forgiveness is ours when we turn from sin and self and turn to God asking Jesus Christ to forgive us of our sins and to be the Lord and Savior of our life.
Are you forgiven?
Remember – Payday Someday … the Lord always keeps His promises!
Application
I have placed my faith and my trust in Jesus Christ. I know that He is my Lord and my Savior! Heaven is my home!
How about you? When you die where will you spend eternity, Heaven or Hell?
Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for allowing me the privilege of being one of Your children. I don't deserve it. I know that I am a sinner. I know that I deserve to spend eternity in Hell separated from all of my loved ones. Thank You for giving me what I don't deserve and not giving me what I do.

I pray for any person who might take the time to read this blog. Help them to place their faith and their trust in Jesus and help them to understand what He has done for them on the cross. I pray for his or her salvation. Open up their spiritual eyes so they can understand what You have done for them.

11 Then I saw heaven opened, and a white horse was standing there. Its rider was named Faithful and True, for he judges fairly and wages a righteous war. 
12 His eyes were like flames of fire, and on his head were many crowns. A name was written on him that no one understood except himself. 
13 He wore a robe dipped in blood, and his title was the Word of God. 
14 The armies of heaven, dressed in the finest of pure white linen, followed him on white horses. 
15 From his mouth came a sharp sword to strike down the nations. He will rule them with an iron rod. He will release the fierce wrath of God, the Almighty, like juice flowing from a winepress. 
16 On his robe at his thigh was written this title: King of all kings and Lord of all lords.
Observation

I don't know what you think Jesus will look like when we see Him, but I think in the book of Revelation you and I get a good glimpse!
Revelation 1:13-16
“And standing in the middle of the lampstands was someone like the Son of Man. He was wearing a long robe with a gold sash across his chest.  His head and his hair were white like wool, as white as snow. And his eyes were like flames of fire.  His feet were like polished bronze refined in a furnace, and his voice thundered like mighty ocean waves.  He held seven stars in his right hand, and a sharp two-edged sword came from his mouth. And his face was like the sun in all its brilliance.”
When Jesus returns the second and final time to this earth He will come as Victor and Champion!
Amen! Come, Lord Jesus!
Application
I am ready for Christ's second coming!

Heavenly Father, I know that what I think Jesus will look like when I see Him is nothing compared to what He will really look like. I think, just like Heaven, Jesus will be indescribable!

Psalm 73
25 Whom have I in heaven but you?
    I desire you more than anything on earth.

26 My health may fail, and my spirit may grow weak,
    but God remains the strength of my heart;
    he is mine forever.
27 Those who desert him will perish,
    for you destroy those who abandon you.

28 But as for me, how good it is to be near God!
    I have made the Sovereign Lord my shelter,
    and I will tell everyone about the wonderful things you do.
Observation
The Psalmist, who wrote Psalm 73 is being very honest. He starts out his Psalm bemoaning the fact that the wicked have got it made! If you and I are honest we have all had those same thoughts!
He says this about the wicked in verses 4-9,
“They seem to live such painless lives; their bodies are so healthy and strong. They don’t have troubles like other people; they’re not plagued with problems like everyone else. They wear pride like a jeweled necklace and clothe themselves with cruelty. These fat cats have everything their hearts could ever wish for! They scoff and speak only evil; in their pride they seek to crush others. They boast against the very heavens, and their words strut throughout the earth.”
But then in verses 21 and 22 he gets honest and confesses to God that he is just bitter, “Then I realized that my heart was bitter, and I was all torn up inside. I was so foolish and ignorant—I must have seemed like a senseless animal to you.”
And finally in verses 25-28 he makes this powerful declaration of his faith,
“Whom have I in heaven but you? I desire you more than anything on earth. My health may fail, and my spirit may grow weak, but God remains the strength of my heart; he is mine forever. Those who desert him will perish, for you destroy those who abandon you. But as for me, how good it is to be near God! I have made the Sovereign Lord my shelter, and I will tell everyone about the wonderful things you do.”
Application
I think that I share all the feelings and emotions that the Psalmist expresses in Psalm 73! I will pray Psalm 73:23-28 back to the Lord!

8 But some of the astrologers went to the king and informed on the Jews. 9 They said to King Nebuchadnezzar, “Long live the king! 10 You issued a decree requiring all the people to bow down and worship the gold statue when they hear the sound of the horn, flute, zither, lyre, harp, pipes, and other musical instruments. 11 That decree also states that those who refuse to obey must be thrown into a blazing furnace. 

12 But there are some Jews—Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego—whom you have put in charge of the province of Babylon. They pay no attention to you, Your Majesty. They refuse to serve your gods and do not worship the gold statue you have set up.”

13 Then Nebuchadnezzar flew into a rage and ordered that Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego be brought before him. When they were brought in, 14 Nebuchadnezzar said to them, “Is it true, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, that you refuse to serve my gods or to worship the gold statue I have set up? 
15 I will give you one more chance to bow down and worship the statue I have made when you hear the sound of the musical instruments. But if you refuse, you will be thrown immediately into the blazing furnace. And then what god will be able to rescue you from my power?”
16 Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego replied, “O Nebuchadnezzar, we do not need to defend ourselves before you. 17 If we are thrown into the blazing furnace, the God whom we serve is able to save us. He will rescue us from your power, Your Majesty. 18 But even if he doesn’t, we want to make it clear to you, Your Majesty, that we will never serve your gods or worship the gold statue you have set up.”

The Blazing Furnace

19 Nebuchadnezzar was so furious with Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego that his face became distorted with rage. He commanded that the furnace be heated seven times hotter than usual. 20 Then he ordered some of the strongest men of his army to bind Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego and throw them into the blazing furnace. 
21 So they tied them up and threw them into the furnace, fully dressed in their pants, turbans, robes, and other garments. 22 And because the king, in his anger, had demanded such a hot fire in the furnace, the flames killed the soldiers as they threw the three men in. 23 So Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, securely tied, fell into the roaring flames.
24 But suddenly, Nebuchadnezzar jumped up in amazement and exclaimed to his advisers, “Didn’t we tie up three men and throw them into the furnace?”
“Yes, Your Majesty, we certainly did,” they replied.
25 “Look!” Nebuchadnezzar shouted. “I see four men, unbound, walking around in the fire unharmed! And the fourth looks like a god!”
26 Then Nebuchadnezzar came as close as he could to the door of the flaming furnace and shouted: “Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, servants of the Most High God, come out! Come here!”
So Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego stepped out of the fire. 27 Then the high officers, officials, governors, and advisers crowded around them and saw that the fire had not touched them. Not a hair on their heads was singed, and their clothing was not scorched. They didn’t even smell of smoke!
Observation
God put Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego and their friend Daniel in a culture where God was not the center of worship.
It was a culture not too different from our own today.
I love the strong declaration of their faith in verses 17 and 18, “If we are thrown into the blazing furnace, the God whom we serve is able to save us. He will rescue us from your power, Your Majesty. But even if he doesn’t, we want to make it clear to you, Your Majesty, that we will never serve your gods or worship the gold statue you have set up.”
Let's pray and ask God to give us the guts to stand up and live godly lives no matter what the cost!

I want the faith and boldness of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego!

Prayer
Heavenly Father, give me the faith and boldness of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego! Don't let me be a spiritual wimp! Help me to walk by faith and not by sight. (2 Corinthians 5:7) Don't ever let me grow tired of these wonderful stories that I read in Your Word. I know that You have a lesson for me today from this story. Give me the strength to live out this day in a way that pleases You. You are mighty God! Nothing is too hard for You!

Revelation 16
21 There was a terrible hailstorm, and hailstones weighing as much as seventy-five pounds fell from the sky onto the people below. They cursed God because of the terrible plague of the hailstorm.
Observation
You want to see “climate change” - Revelation 16 describes some serious climate change! Seventy-five-pound chunks of ice coming down from the sky, now, that is some serious climate change!
Sadly, instead of repenting of their sins, the people cursed God because of the plague of the seventy-five-pound hailstorm!
The terrible future events that we find in Revelation are hard to read about!
So it is a good thing for me that I know how the story ends!
We blame current climate change or what we think is climate change on all kinds of different things, but in Revelation God tells us the cause of climate change. It is caused by man's rebellion against God. It is caused by our sinfulness!
Strongest hurricanes on record, coldest winters, hottest summers, enormous fires, these are just the beginning – we haven't seen seventy-five-pound hailstones yet!
I don't know about you but I am glad that I have a personal relationship with the King of Kings and Lord of Lords. I am glad that the Creator of this entire Universe calls me friend!
John 15:12-14
12 This is my commandment: Love each other in the same way I have loved you. 13 There is no greater love than to lay down one’s life for one’s friends. 14 You are my friends if you do what I command.
Daniel 2
Then Daniel praised the God of heaven. 
20 He said,
“Praise the name of God forever and ever,
    for he has all wisdom and power.
21 He controls the course of world events;
    he removes kings and sets up other kings.
He gives wisdom to the wise
    and knowledge to the scholars.
22 He reveals deep and mysterious things
    and knows what lies hidden in darkness,
    though he is surrounded by light.
Application
I will view all the changes in our climate from the perspective of God's Word. God is in control of world events!
Prayer
Heavenly Father, I love reading the story of Daniel. In Daniel and in Revelation You have made it perfectly clear that You are in charge of world events. When storms, droughts, floods, heatwaves, and freezing temperatures all set new records it shouldn't come as a surprise because I know that You plan to use all of those to try to get our attention! I want You to know that You have my attention. I plan to live for You.
I pray for all of those impacted by our last hurricane. I pray that many of them, because of the love that is hopefully being poured out on them will place their trust and their hope in You. Help them, Lord, in their time of need.
I pray for my granddaughter Sierra today on her birthday. And I also pray for Pastor Rapley Armstrong today on his birthday. Bless them both, Lord!
