Scripture
Romans 2
28 For you are not a true Jew just because you were born of Jewish parents or because you have gone through the ceremony of circumcision. 29 No, a true Jew is one whose heart is right with God. And true circumcision is not merely obeying the letter of the law; rather, it is a change of heart produced by God’s Spirit. And a person with a changed heart seeks praise from God, not from people.
Observation
Being born Jewess does not make you a true Jew or even if you go through the ceremony of circumcision. The statement by Paul is sort of like the saying, “Pushing a wheel barrow into a garage does not make the wheel barrow a car.” A person simply going to church doesn’t make them a Christian. If you push a wheelbarrow into a church building it is still a wheelbarrow.
So what makes a person a true Jew, or even better for us today what makes a person a Christian. The answer is found in verse 29, “it is a change of heart produced by God’s Spirit.”
When we are born we grow up, we grow up with this bent or tendency towards sin and the Bible says that “all have sinned and come short of the glory of God” and the Bible says that what we earn by sinning is spiritual death. (Romans 3:23; 6:23) The Good News is that Jesus does not want us to die in our sins. He wants to save us.
He wants to give us a new clean heart; He wants to transform us.
John 3:16
"For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life."
John 5:24
"I tell you the truth, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life and will not be condemned; he has crossed over from death to life."
Romans 10:9-10
"That if you confess with your mouth, "Jesus is Lord," and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. [10] For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved."
Romans 10:13
"Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved."
2 Cor. 5:17
"Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come!"
Application
I will try to share the Good News of Romans 10:13 with someone today!
Prayer
Heavenly Father, help me to be your mouthpiece today so someone can understand how much you love them. I pray for family members that need to call on the name of Jesus to be saved that You would draw them to salvation.
