Jesus Was Sleeping
At The Back Of The Boat
With His Head On A Cushion.

The high waves were so big and the wind was so strong that the disciples knew that they were in big trouble. It was their attitude; it was their total lack of faith, and it was their indignation at their Master sleeping that caught my attention this morning as I read this story. When our circumstances dominate and totally own us it is also easy for us to forget that our Savior is only a prayer away.

Scripture

Mark 4

37 But soon a fierce storm came up. High waves were breaking into the boat, and it began to fill with water.

38 Jesus was sleeping at the back of the boat with his head on a cushion. The disciples woke him up, shouting, “Teacher, don’t you care that we’re going to drown?”

39 When Jesus woke up, he rebuked the wind and said to the waves, “Silence! Be still!” Suddenly the wind stopped, and there was a great calm. 40 Then he asked them, “Why are you afraid? Do you still have no faith?”

Observation

The high waves were so big and the wind was so strong that the disciples knew that they were in big trouble. It was their attitude; it was their total lack of faith, and it was their indignation at their Master sleeping that caught my attention this morning as I read this story.

When our circumstances dominate and totally own us it is also easy for us to forget that our Savior is only a prayer away.

When we are in a storm and our boat is sinking we have a choice. We always have a choice. We can shake our fists in anger at everyone around us. We can blame everyone else for the trouble that we are in. We can even get angry with God and shake our fists at Him. Or if we are smart we can humble ourselves and call out to Jesus and let our Savior rescue us.

The two questions that He asked His disciples are two questions that you and I must answer every time we find ourselves sinking in our circumstances: “Why are you afraid? Do you still have no faith?”

The rough boat ride and the storm were nothing for Jesus! He could have slept through the entire ordeal. For the disciples it was a teachable moment, the high waves, the strong wind, the water pouring into the boat, were circumstances used to teach them that Jesus was more than just a teacher, Jesus was God Himself. 

Jesus is in our boat of circumstances today. Why are we afraid? Do we still have no faith? 


Application

I will call on my Savior today. I will trust in Him. How about you?

Prayer

Heavenly Father, if our lives were problem free we would miss out on the special relationship that You want us to have with You. Suffering and living through difficult circumstances allows us to know You in an intimate and a very special way that only those who have gone through suffering can appreciate. I pray for my friends that are dealing with cancer, some that are facing surgery, and for others who have health issues that doctors can’t fix and pain that they must live with everyday. Give them strength. Help them to depend on You. Don’t let them get discouraged.

I will hold on to these promises today:   

Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us, Ephesians 3:20

So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand. Isaiah 41:10

“Do not be afraid, for I have ransomed you. I have called you by name; you are mine. When you go through deep waters, I will be with you. When you go through rivers of difficulty, you will not drown. When you walk through the fire of oppression, you will not be burned up; the flames will not consume you.For I am the Lord, your God, Isaiah 43:1-3
