Scripture

1 Samuel 16

6 When they arrived, Samuel took one look at Eliab and thought, “Surely this is the LORD’s anointed!”

7 But the LORD said to Samuel, “Don’t judge by his appearance or height, for I have rejected him. The LORD doesn’t see things the way you see them. People judge by outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart.”

8 Then Jesse told his son Abinadab to step forward and walk in front of Samuel. But Samuel said, “This is not the one the LORD has chosen.” 9 Next Jesse summoned Shimea, but Samuel said, “Neither is this the one the LORD has chosen.” 10 In the same way all seven of Jesse’s sons were presented to Samuel. But Samuel said to Jesse, “The LORD has not chosen any of these.” 11 Then Samuel asked, “Are these all the sons you have?”

“There is still the youngest,” Jesse replied. “But he’s out in the fields watching the sheep and goats.”

“Send for him at once,” Samuel said. “We will not sit down to eat until he arrives.”
12 So Jesse sent for him. He was dark and handsome, with beautiful eyes.
And the LORD said, “This is the one; anoint him.”

Observation

You might get all excited to be able to personally see a famous movie star, or a famous entertainer, or some famous television preacher, but God does not judge by the outward appearance, He looks deep into the heart.

David was the runt of the litter. His dad didn’t even think of him when Samuel was looking for a possible person to be king. Even Samuel thought that God would have chosen Jesse’s son Eliab because he must have looked like the natural person for the job.

We can’t go by looks or the outward appearance of someone when we are looking for a person to serve. We need to pray and ask God to show us who would make the best leader or the best worker. It is not who we usually think that will prove to be the best person for the job.

Application

As I look for people to serve I will ask God to show me those that He has chosen rather than the ones that I would choose.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, give me wisdom and give me Your eyes to know how to choose people for places of ministry. I have put people in places of ministry only to later see that they were not the right people for that position. I pray that you raise up workers to help us people that have a desire to serve. Show me the people that You approve of that have hearts inclined towards You. David was a man after Your own heart. I pray for people with hearts like David’s. Give me that kind of heart too.
