Humor…we all desperately need it

Job 15; Acts 19; Acts 20

Scripture

Acts 20

7 On the first day of the week we came together to break bread. Paul spoke to the people and, because he intended to leave the next day, kept on talking until midnight. 8 There were many lamps in the upstairs room where we were meeting. 9 Seated in a window was a young man named Eutychus, who was sinking into a deep sleep as Paul talked on and on. When he was sound asleep, he fell to the ground from the third story and was picked up dead. 10 Paul went down, threw himself on the young man and put his arms around him. "Don't be alarmed," he said. "He's alive!" 11 Then he went upstairs again and broke bread and ate. After talking until daylight, he left. 12 The people took the young man home alive and were greatly comforted.

Observation

Luke, the writer of the book of Acts, writes in a little humor into this very almost tragic accident! You have to read between the lines to catch it. Did you catch it? This young man Eutychus didn’t just dose off while Paul was talking, oh no, Luke says that while Paul talked on and on Eutychus fell into a deep sleep. If you are sitting on a ledge of a third story window it is a very dangerous thing to do, especially if the preacher talks on and on. By the way, it didn’t stop Paul from continuing to talk the passage says that Paul continued to talk until daylight. Take a minute and just place yourself in that home and imagine what it must have been like! Don’t you know that after Eutychus was raised from the dead that everyone had a good laugh about it and I am sure that they joked about Paul being long winded, just like Luke did!

Application

I need to see some humor in and around me today. It has been a difficult week!

Prayer

Heavenly Father, you are the Alpha and Omega, the First and the Last. There is no one greater than you. You are the Resurrection and the Life, The great I AM. Nothing is too hard for you! Help me today deal with difficult people who seem to love to find fault with things and find fault with other people. Bring people into my life today that will encourage me and not wound me. Above all of this, your word says, guard your heart, for it affects everything you do. Father, today help me guard my heart. Amen.
