Scripture

Ezra 8

21 There, by the Ahava Canal, I proclaimed a fast, so that we might humble ourselves before our God and ask him for a safe journey for us and our children, with all our possessions. 22 I was ashamed to ask the king for soldiers and horsemen to protect us from enemies on the road, because we had told the king, "The gracious hand of our God is on everyone who looks to him, but his great anger is against all who forsake him." 23 So we fasted and petitioned our God about this, and he answered our prayer.

Observation

Tonight (Oct. 6) I received a call from one of our ladies in our church letting me know that someone had just stolen a purse in our gym. Tomorrow we are having a lunch celebrating “Academy Day” and several ladies were up at the gym getting things ready for the lunch tomorrow. They didn’t realize that the purse had been taken until they got ready to leave. When I arrived I discovered a second floor door of the gym had not been locked and the person must have entered from the second floor because the ladies had locked the first floor doors once they were inside.

As they were searching the building looking for the purse and hoping not to find the intruder one of the ladies told me that she prayed for God’s safety for them. God did answer their prayers. We found the ladies purse, minus the money that she had inside, but no credit cards or gift cards or cell phone were taken!

Now I pray that this thief would get caught and would get caught tonight before he harms anyone else!

Application

Ezra admitted that he was ashamed to ask the king for protection when he had just been bragging on the all-powerful God that he served. So he fasted and prayed and asked God to keep them safe. And He did! We also need to pray and not just think that God will protect us without calling out to Him. He wants to be asked!

Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank you for your protection. Thank you for protecting the ladies tonight and thank you for not allowing the thief to take the credit cards and other valuables in the purse. I pray for this thief that he would get caught and that he would be confronted with the Gospel and I pray that he would repent and turn his life over to you. Don’t allow him to hurt anyone Lord. Protect our church buildings and our people from people that are evil. Nothing is too hard for you! Amen.
