Scripture

Matthew 26

Then the others grabbed Jesus and arrested him. 51 But one of the men with Jesus pulled out his sword and struck the high priest’s slave, slashing off his ear.
52 “Put away your sword,” Jesus told him. “Those who use the sword will die by the sword.

53 Don’t you realize that I could ask my Father for thousands of angels to protect us, and he would send them instantly? 54 But if I did, how would the Scriptures be fulfilled that describe what must happen now?”

Observation

We need to remember today that Jesus could have called ten thousand Angels to come and rescue Him but He chose to die for you and for me. Did you notice that He said that He could have called for thousands of angels to protect “us”? He didn’t say to come to protect “me”.

We have angels that do protect us today. At least I believe that we do have their protection. Jesus was probably surrounded by thousands of angels at the moment that He was arrested but they were not permitted to come to His aid.

Angels do God’s bidding. They are not free to do what they want. If they had been free to act on their own they probably would have rescued Jesus and then we would have died in our sins. Jesus wrestled all night with the decision to be obedient to the Father’s will and that obedience was His death on the cross.

When we are asked by God to take up our cross it means to do His will and not our own. He says that we need to take up our cross daily and follow Him.

Application

I will seek to do the Lord’s will today and not my own.

Prayer

" Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.”
