Scripture

Luke 9

23 Then he said to the crowd, “If any of you wants to be my follower, you must turn from your selfish ways, take up your cross daily, and follow me. 24 If you try to hang on to your life, you will lose it. But if you give up your life for my sake, you will save it. 25 And what do you benefit if you gain the whole world but are yourself lost or destroyed? 26 If anyone is ashamed of me and my message, the Son of Man will be ashamed of that person when he returns in his glory and in the glory of the Father and the holy angels. 27 I tell you the truth, some standing here right now will not die before they see the Kingdom of God.”

Observation

Give me a definition of “selfish” … ok now give me a definition of a servant. Can you be a Christ Follower and not be someone that serves? You may say, “I want to serve God, but I don’t want to serve others”, then you can’t serve God. Serving God is serving others.

It is a contradiction for someone to be called a Christian and that person not also be someone that serves. A Christian is someone that serves others.
Definition of the word selfish “Concerned chiefly or only with oneself”

For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many." Mark 10:45

Jesus came to serve, not to be served. You and I were created to serve, not to be served.

Application

I will gladly be worn out serving those around me.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, help me be like Jesus. Help me not to worry about myself. Help me to focus on the needs of those around and show me how to be a servant to them.
