Scripture

Luke 14

The Cost of Being a Disciple

25 A large crowd was following Jesus. He turned around and said to them, 26 “If you want to be my disciple, you must hate everyone else by comparison—your father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters—yes, even your own life. Otherwise, you cannot be my disciple. 27 And if you do not carry your own cross and follow me, you cannot be my disciple.

Observation

Here is how to reduce a crowd quickly …just give them verse twenty-six, “If you want to be my disciple, you must hate everyone else by comparison—your father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters—yes, even your own life. Otherwise, you cannot be my disciple.” I wonder how many quit following Jesus the day He gave them this lesson on discipleship. Are you willing to put Christ before all of your other relationships? Are you willing to serve Him any place on this planet? Are you willing to leave all of those that you love and go to a place where you don’t know a soul so they can know Christ? Are you willing? There is a cost to discipleship!

Application

I am willing to serve Him even in some of the worst, some of the most dangerous places on this earth if He calls me to do so.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, help me count the cost and help me be willing to serve You anywhere. I pray for those in Haiti. I pray for those making plans to go over and help. I pray for the leadership of the Florida Baptist Convention and the International Mission Board as they make plans to help care for the Haitian people. I pray for people to still be alive in the rubble. I pray that tomorrow more will be recovered alive.
