It Is What Comes From The Inside That Defiles You.
It
Is
What Comes
From
The Inside That Defiles You.
Scripture
Mark
7
Observation
Hasn't
Halloween now become a huge moneymaker for businesses in America. I
read somewhere that people will spend 2.6 billion dollars on
Halloween this year, an average of $25 per adult.
And
tonight Kathy and I look forward to all the kids (especially our
grandkids) coming to our door wearing their spooky masks and
Halloween costumes thinking that they are going to scare us!
Yes,
our kids and our grandkids will wear masks tonight on Halloween. But
hey, all of us adults wear masks too, the difference is that we
adults wear them every day.
On
the outside we appear one way, but inside of each one of us lurks
everything evil that is described in Mark 7:20-23.
I
memorized this verse a long time ago as a reminder to me about what
is lurking inside of me. “The
heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can
know it?” Jeremiah 17:9
Application
I
realize that I am a sinner. I know that I am broken. I know that I am
capable of every evil thing that Jesus describes in Mark 7.
Romans
12:1-2
Therefore,
brothers, by the mercies of God, I urge you to present your
bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God; this is
your spiritual worship.
2 Do not be
conformed to this age, but be transformed by the renewing
of your mind, so that you may discern what is the good,
pleasing, and perfect will of God.
Prayer
Heavenly
Father, I pray that you keep my children and my grandchildren safe
tonight as they go out trick o' treating. I pray that You keep them
well. Continue to heal our daughter Debby.
I
pray that You will help me to be a person of integrity. Help me to
walk in purity. Keep me away from stupid sins. Sins that mess up my
walk with You and that will mess up my relationship with those around
me. I know that my heart is deceitful above all things and
desperately wicked. So help me to guard my heart.

Why Do The Wicked Prosper, Growing Old And Powerful?
Why
Do
The
Wicked
Prosper, Growing Old And Powerful?
Scripture
Job
21
13 They
spend their days in prosperity,
then go down to the grave[a] in peace.
then go down to the grave[a] in peace.
16 (They
think their prosperity is of their own doing,
but I will have nothing to do with that kind of thinking.)
but I will have nothing to do with that kind of thinking.)
17 “Yet
the light of the wicked never seems to be extinguished.
Do they ever have trouble?
Does God distribute sorrows to them in anger?
Do they ever have trouble?
Does God distribute sorrows to them in anger?
18 Are they
driven before the wind like straw?
Are they carried away by the storm like chaff?
Not at all!
Are they carried away by the storm like chaff?
Not at all!
Observation
My
younger sister Bea is also reading through the Bible just like I do
every year and yesterday she told me that she is also reading through
Job right now. She shared with me that reading through Job was
depressing and I told her that every year I struggle as I go through
it myself!
Who
can blame Job for what he shares in Job 21 when he thinks about his
life compared to the lives of the wicked and ungodly around him?
Haven't you done the same thing? I sure have! How come the ungodly
seem to prosper and do so well financially? It sure looks like
someone is blessing them.
I
would be surprised (and I wouldn't believe you) if you said that you
have never had that thought!
You
and I have an advantage that Job did not have. We have the complete
Bible. We have the big picture! We know how the story ends … Job
did not, at least not like we do.
Maybe
you feel a lot like Job did when he shared his feelings with his
so-called friends. Maybe you also feel like you are getting a bum
deal from God.
God
loves me and you! He has big plans for us. He has plans for us that
will last for eternity. He has something planned for us that is so
good that we can't even begin to imagine how good that it is going to
be.
So
let's not compare ourselves with those around us. Let's look up and
trust Him!
2
Corinthians 4:16-18 MESSAGE
So
we’re not giving up. How could we! Even though on the outside it
often looks like things are falling apart on us, on the inside, where
God is making new life, not a day goes by without his unfolding
grace. These hard times are small potatoes compared
to the coming good times, the lavish celebration prepared for us.
There’s far more here than meets the eye. The things we see now are
here today, gone tomorrow. But the things we can’t see now will
last forever.
And
Job did not have the advantage of being able to read Psalm 37 like we
can!
Psalm
37
1 Don’t
worry about the wicked
or envy those who do wrong.
or envy those who do wrong.
6 He will
make your innocence radiate like the dawn,
and the justice of your cause will shine like the noonday sun.
and the justice of your cause will shine like the noonday sun.
7 Be still
in the presence of the Lord,
and wait patiently for him to act.
Don’t worry about evil people who prosper
or fret about their wicked schemes.
and wait patiently for him to act.
Don’t worry about evil people who prosper
or fret about their wicked schemes.
Application
When
I am struggling with problems and difficulties I will do my best not
to compare myself with those around me and I will do my best to keep
my eyes on Jesus.
How
about you? … Why me? … Why not me!
Prayer
Heavenly
Father, this world is not my home. I am just passing through. I am
reminded that You have told me in Your Word that I am going to
experience trouble in this life. And You told me in that same verse
to have courage because Jesus has conquered this world. (John 16:33)
You have also told me that what lies ahead for me is so wonderful
that it is incomprehensible! (1 Corinthians 2:9) So thank You, Lord,
for taking such good care of me.
I
pray for those struggling right now with health issues, financial
issues, relationship issues. Help them to trust in You. Help them to
see their situation from Your perspective.

“Who Is This Man?” They Asked Each Other. “Even The Wind And Waves Obey Him!”
“Who
Is This Man?”
They
Asked Each Other.
“Even
The Wind And Waves Obey Him!”
Scripture
Mark
4
35 As
evening came, Jesus said to his disciples, “Let’s cross to
the other side of the lake.”
36 So they
took Jesus in the boat and started out, leaving the crowds behind
(although other boats followed).
37 But soon
a fierce storm came up. High waves were breaking into the boat, and
it began to fill with water.
38 Jesus was
sleeping at the back of the boat with his head on a cushion. The
disciples woke him up, shouting, “Teacher, don’t you care that
we’re going to drown?”
39 When
Jesus woke up, he rebuked the wind and said to the waves, “Silence!
Be still!” Suddenly the wind stopped, and there was a great
calm.
41 The
disciples were absolutely terrified. “Who is this man?” they
asked each other. “Even the wind and waves obey him!”
Observation
Maybe
you, like the disciples of Jesus, are going through a rough time and
maybe you too feel like you are about to sink.
Yesterday,
was a difficult day at the Williams' house.
We
kept getting text messages from our daughter Debby asking us if she
should go to the emergency room. She had been sick for about 2 weeks
and instead of getting better she had gotten worse.
Finally
late in the afternoon yesterday she went to Urgent Care and they
told her to go to the emergency room. They admitted her last night to
treat her for pneumonia. She was one sick girl when we saw her in the
emergency room.
I
was glad to hear my daughter say to us last night as we were visiting
her in the ER, “I prayed and I asked the Lord to show me whether I
needed to go to the hospital or not.”
I
am so glad that my daughter relied on the 'One' who with a word calms
the wind and the seas.
Yes,
her Mom and Dad were also praying, we were crying out to God to help
our daughter.
Application
Thank
You, Lord, that You always hear my prayers!
How
about you? Who are you calling on to help you in times of trouble?
Prayer
Heavenly
Father, thank You for helping our daughter with the decision of
whether or not to go to the hospital. I pray and ask You to heal her
completely. Meet every need of her life. Show her that You are able
and willing to take care of her.
I
pray for any person reading this blog today. Help them to trust You
with the storms that they are facing. Give them Your strength. Help
them to trust completely in You!

This Is Blasphemy! Only God Can Forgive Sins!
This
Is Blasphemy!
Only
God
Can Forgive Sins!
Scripture
Mark
2
2 Soon
the house where he was staying was so packed with visitors that there
was no more room, even outside the door. While he was preaching God’s
word to them,
4 They
couldn’t bring him to Jesus because of the crowd, so they dug a
hole through the roof above his head. Then they lowered the man on
his mat, right down in front of Jesus.
Observation
The
Jewish leaders understood that only God can forgive our sins. They
understood that Jesus was claiming to be God when He said, “My
child, your sins are forgiven.”
Maybe
you, just like these Jewish leaders, refuse to believe that Jesus
Christ is God. If that is the case then I feel very sad for you. I
hope before your life is over that you will have a change of heart!
It
is not good people that go to Heaven and bad people that go to Hell.
It is forgiven people that go to Heaven.
Colossians
1
13 For he
has rescued us from the kingdom of darkness and transferred us into
the Kingdom of his dear Son, 14 who purchased our
freedom and forgave our sins.
Christ Is Supreme
15 Christ
is the visible image of the invisible God.
He existed before anything was created and is supreme over all creation,
He existed before anything was created and is supreme over all creation,
16 for
through him God created everything
in the heavenly realms and on earth.
He made the things we can see
and the things we can’t see—
such as thrones, kingdoms, rulers, and authorities in the unseen world.
Everything was created through him and for him.
in the heavenly realms and on earth.
He made the things we can see
and the things we can’t see—
such as thrones, kingdoms, rulers, and authorities in the unseen world.
Everything was created through him and for him.
18 Christ
is also the head of the church,
which is his body.
He is the beginning,
supreme over all who rise from the dead.[f]
So he is first in everything.
which is his body.
He is the beginning,

So he is first in everything.
20 and
through him God reconciled
everything to himself.
He made peace with everything in heaven and on earth
by means of Christ’s blood on the cross.
everything to himself.
He made peace with everything in heaven and on earth
by means of Christ’s blood on the cross.
21 This
includes you who were once far away from God. You were his enemies,
separated from him by your evil thoughts and actions.
22 Yet
now he has reconciled you to himself through the death of Christ in
his physical body. As a result, he has brought you into his own
presence, and you are holy and blameless as you stand before him
without a single fault.

John 2:12
I
am writing to you who are God’s children because your sins have
been forgiven through Jesus.
Matthew
10:32-33
32 “Everyone
who acknowledges me publicly here on earth, I will also acknowledge
before my Father in heaven. 33 But
everyone who denies me here on earth, I will also deny before my
Father in heaven.
Application
There
was a time in my life when I was not a believer in the Lord Jesus
Christ, so I will never give up on people now who are presently not
followers of Jesus.
How
about you?
Prayer
Heavenly
Father, if there is someone reading this simple blog today who
doesn't believe in Jesus I pray that You cause them to believe. Do
whatever it takes to make a believer out of them. Open up their
spiritual eyes, soften their hard heart, cause them to turn to You
for salvation. Show them that what the Bible says about Jesus is
true. Show them that He is both Savior and Lord.

Observation
Like
probably many of you I have been fighting a cold for the past couple
of days. During the night last night, I spent a few hours trying to
sleep in a recliner so my coughing didn't wake up Kathy.
And
as I write this you can just imagine how good I feel.
It
is on days like this when it is great to spend some extra time in the
Psalms.
Psalm
27 and Psalm 37 are perfect on a day like today … “The
Lord rescues the godly; he is their fortress in times of trouble.”
(Psalm 37:39)
Application
No
matter what I am going through I know that the Lord is with me and He
will take care of me.
How
about you? Are you trusting in the Lord to take care of you?
Prayer
Heavenly
Father, it only takes a common cold for me to realize how much I
appreciate being healthy and feeling well most of the time. I know we
take our health too much for granted. Thank You for taking such good
care of me. I am blessed. Lord, it would sure be nice if this cold
didn't last too long. And I know that You are the only One who knows
the cure to the common cold. I have tried all the known remedies and
they are not helping too much right now.
I
pray for a friend who is facing heart by-pass surgery. I pray for
healing. Show him how real You are. Show him that He can trust You

Do You Think You Can Persuade Me To Become A Christian So Quickly?
Do
You Think
You
Can Persuade Me
To
Become A Christian So Quickly?
Scripture
Acts
26
29 Paul
replied, “Whether quickly or not, I pray to God that both you and
everyone here in this audience might become the same as I am, except
for these chains.”
Observation
When
I am with someone who is not a Christian my heart's desire is that
they will become the same as I am.
I
know that if they surrender their lives to Christ they will get to
experience all that I get to experience and they will get to live for
eternity with me in Heaven.
I
don't know about you, but it breaks my heart as I watch unbelievers
live out their life filled with drama, drama, and more drama when
they could be living an abundant life when they could be living out
a life filled with God's peace, a peace that passes all
understanding.
Are
you tired of all the drama? Surrender your life to Jesus Christ
today!
Psalm
4:8
In peace I
will lie down and sleep, for you alone, O Lord,
will keep me safe.
Psalm

The Lord gives

them with peace.
Romans

letting your sinful nature control your mind leads to death. But
letting the Spirit control your mind leads to life and peace.

22 But the
Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy,
peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness,
and self-control. There is no law against these things!
Application

Prayer
Heavenly
Father, I want my children and my grandchildren to have a personal
relationship with You. I don't want them to live life without meaning

O Lord, I Give My Life To You.
O
Lord,
I
Give
My Life To You.
Scripture
Psalm
25
1
O Lord, I give my life to you.
Observation
King
David understood what it took to be successful in life. Have you
learned the secret?
Most
people haven't learned it and life for them is nothing like it ought
to be. If you and I want to experience life the way our Creator
might for us to experience it then you and I need to daily surrender
our lives to Him.
Are
you having a rough time right now? Do you feel empty inside and does
life lack meaning and purpose?
King
David has a solution for you and it is found in Psalm 25:1 “O Lord,
I give my life to you.”
Surrender!
Let God be number One in your life today and things will start to
make sense!
Every
day we wake up we have a choice to make … we either live out the
day with God being number one in our life or we take that number one
spot for our self or we let some other person or we let some 'thing'
take the number one spot.
Application
Lord,
I give my life to you today. I trust in you. Take charge of my life
today! I want You to be in control.
How
about you? Who is in charge of your life?
Prayer
Heavenly
Father, thank You for letting me know that when I put You first in my
life then You will take care of everything that I need. Wow! Remind
me of that promise every time I start to doubt that You have promised
to take care of me.
Help
any person that may read this blog today realize that all the need to
do to live a victorious life is put You first in his or her life. It
is a daily decision. Bless them, Lord, as they put You first.

Observation
Let's Finish
Well. …
I wrote this blog
on the morning of October 24, 2011. I didn't know that in just a few
hours after writing it that our lives would change forever.
At 10 PM on
October 24, 2011, I experienced a massive heart attack. Many of you
prayed for my recovery. With less than a 5 % chance of survival after
the 14-hour surgery it must have looked pretty gloomy to all of you
who were praying for me.
But today Kathy
and I will celebrate 8 more years of life because you prayed. This
blog that I wrote 8 years ago is still the desire of my life!
… written on
October 24, 2011
I
want to finish well. I want my life to count for the kingdom. I don't
want to retire. I don't want to slow down. I want to finish well.
I
want to make a difference in the lives of as many people as possible.
There
has been a job that has been assigned to me by the Lord Jesus—the
work of telling others the Good News about the wonderful grace of
God.
Do you want to finish well too?
Do you want to finish well too?
Application
Today
I want to count. I want to make a difference in someone's life.

Prayer
Heavenly
Father, I want to finish well. I want to complete my task. I want You

Because The Lord Is My Shepherd, I Have Everything I Need!
Because
The
Lord Is My Shepherd,
I
Have Everything I Need!
Scripture
Psalm
23
1
Because
the Lord is my Shepherd, I have everything I need!
Observation
It
is never-ending. You and I being bombarded by people trying to get us
to buy or try something newer, sleeker, improved, bigger, better,
faster, tastier, and/or prettier!
Now,
you can see it on the internet, order it, and have it delivered to
your home or business the very next day!
Oh,
but if you and I are content with what we have that hurts … it
hurts their bottom line!
Until
Jesus is enough - nothing will ever be enough!
One
relationship one after another, one toy one after another, shinier,
bigger, newer, prettier, handsome-er (is that even a word), without
Jesus, nothing will ever satisfy our deepest needs – we will never
ever be content!
Philippians
4:11-13
12 I
know how to live on almost nothing or with everything. I have learned
the secret of living in every situation, whether it is with a full
stomach or empty, with plenty or little.
I
Timothy 6:6-12
7 After all,
we brought nothing with us when we came into the world, and we can’t
take anything with us when we leave it.
9 But people
who long to be rich fall into temptation and are trapped by many
foolish and harmful desires that plunge them into ruin and
destruction.
10 For the
love of money is the root of all kinds of evil. And some people,
craving money, have wandered from the true faith and pierced
themselves with many sorrows.
11 But
you, Timothy, are a man of God; so run from all these evil things.
Pursue righteousness and a godly life, along with faith, love,
perseverance, and gentleness.
12 Fight the
good fight for the true faith. Hold tightly to the eternal life to
which God has called you, which you have declared so well before many
witnesses.
2
Corinthians 12:9-10
9 Each time
he said, “My grace is all you need. My power works best in
weakness.” So now I am glad to boast about my weaknesses, so
that the power of Christ can work through me.
10 That’s
why I take pleasure in my weaknesses, and in the insults, hardships,
persecutions, and troubles that I suffer for Christ. For when I am
weak, then I am strong.
Romans
8:28
28 And
we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of
those who love God and are called according to his purpose for them.
Application
Jesus
is enough for me. I will ask my Heavenly Father to help me to stay
contented with what I have.
How
about you?
Prayer
Heavenly
Father, help me to be content right where I am. Don't let me covet.
Don't let me be jealous of what someone else has or what someone else
gets to do. Constantly remind me that I have everything that I need.
I have a personal relationship with You.
I
pray for those who are unhappy in their marriage, unhappy with their
partner, unhappy with their situation in life. Help them to see that
until Jesus is enough they will never be content.

“Sirs,
What Must I Do To Be Saved?”
They
Replied,
“Believe
In The Lord Jesus And You Will Be Saved ...”
Scripture
Acts
16
22 A mob
quickly formed against Paul and Silas, and the city officials ordered
them stripped and beaten with wooden rods.
23 They were
severely beaten, and then they were thrown into prison. The jailer
was ordered to make sure they didn’t escape.
25 Around
midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and
the other prisoners were listening.
26 Suddenly,
there was a massive earthquake, and the prison was shaken to its
foundations. All the doors immediately flew open, and the chains of
every prisoner fell off!
27 The
jailer woke up to see the prison doors wide open. He assumed the
prisoners had escaped, so he drew his sword to kill himself.
29 The
jailer called for lights and ran to the dungeon and fell down
trembling before Paul and Silas.
31 They
replied, “Believe in the Lord Jesus and you will be saved, along
with everyone in your household.”
33 Even at
that hour of the night, the jailer cared for them and washed their
wounds. Then he and everyone in his household were immediately
baptized.
34 He
brought them into his house and set a meal before them, and he and
his entire household rejoiced because they all believed in God.
Observation
Paul
and Silas were severely beaten with wooden rods and then they were
placed in the inner dungeon with their feet clamped in stocks.
So
what would you do if that happened to you? What would I do if that
happened to me?
What
Paul and Silas did in the middle of the night, at midnight, had all
the other prisoners listening and what they did caused a massive
earthquake.
What
they did caused all the doors in the prison to fly open and all the
chains on every prisoner to suddenly fall off. Yet not one prisoner
even tried to escape!
What
did they do to cause all of this?
The
severely beaten Paul and Silas, at midnight, began to pray and began
to sing hymns, with everyone in the jail listening!
I
love this story. It is all about God's love for a jailer.
God
didn't send the earthquake to free Paul and Silas! He didn't send the
earthquake to free any of the other prisoners either.
No,
God sent the earthquake and God caused all the chains to fall off of
all of the prisoners, not to free any of them, but to set a jailer
and his family free ... free from the penalty of their sins!
What
an amazing story!
Here
is one take home, one lesson from this story for me: when I face
adversity, when I face trials and hardships, the way I handle them
can cause someone who is watching me turn to Christ.
That
is if I handle my bad circumstances, the way Paul and Silas handled
theirs!
Application
God
is working in my life all the time, during the good times and the
bad. Even when circumstances are not good I know that God expects me
to praise Him, talk to Him, and trust Him.
Prayer
Heavenly
Father, I want to be like Paul and Silas. I want to be able to praise
You no matter what is going on in my life. Give me a heart like
theirs! They didn't complain about their wounds or their pain. They
prayed and sang praises to You. Help me to have that kind of faith.
I
pray for any person reading this blog today who is going through
adversity. I pray for those who are suffering. Encourage them through
this story of Paul and Silas and the jailer. Shake the ground
wherever they are at with Your power. Give them Your strength. Help
them to know that You are Sovereign and that You are in control even
when things seem totally out of control and seem to be heading in the
wrong direction.
