If You Do
Anything
You Believe Is Not Right, You Are Sinning.

Scripture

Romans 14
21 It is better not to eat meat or drink wine or do anything else if it might cause another believer to stumble.

23 … If you do anything you believe is not right, you are sinning.

Observation

Here is something to think about … it is called the principle of the weaker brother!

Something may be all right for you and I to do and not all right for those around us to do. Have you ever thought about that?

There are times when we should forgo eating something or drinking something if by eating or drinking we cause a weaker brother to stumble.

For instance, you may think that drinking alcohol in moderation is okay, but if you drink in public around those who struggle with the addiction of alcohol, you might cause a weaker brother to stumble.

In your generosity you may even offer a friend, a brother or sister in Christ a beer or glass of wine; they accept it because maybe they look up to you or maybe because they don’t want to seem rude, and that one drink sends them stumbling down, spirally down back into alcohol addiction.

You might think that the Apostle Paul was old school, but what he said in Romans 14 about not causing a weaker brother to sin applies to each one of us today!

It is something for all of us to think about!

Colossians 3

17 And whatever you do or say, do it as a representative of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks through him to God the Father.

 Application

I will not knowingly do something that may cause my brother or sister in Christ to stumble. How about you?

Prayer

Heavenly Father, help me not cause one of my brothers or sisters in Christ to stumble. Nothing that I may eat or drink is more important than my brothers and sisters in Christ. Show us what we are doing that might be causing our brothers to stumble. Don’t let us be stumbling blocks to anyone coming to Christ or anyone growing in Christ. Show us anything that we are doing that doesn’t please You so we can stop it.
