I Tell You The Truth,
This Poor Widow Has Given
More Than All The Others Who Are Making Contributions.

It is sad, but it is also very easy to overlook and ignore those faithful seniors who have given their lives serving Christ. Their sacrifice proportionately is huge, but we tend to favor the younger even if their sacrifice and their giving is a tiny part of their surplus! Many of them spend most of their money on themselves, and give to the Lord a tiny part of their surplus. The size of their offering may be large, but in reality it is possibly just a tip.

Scripture

Mark 12

41 Jesus sat down near the collection box in the Temple and watched as the crowds dropped in their money. Many rich people put in large amounts.

42 Then a poor widow came and dropped in two small coins.

43 Jesus called his disciples to him and said, “I tell you the truth, this poor widow has given more than all the others who are making contributions.

44 For they gave a tiny part of their surplus, but she, poor as she is, has given everything she had to live on.”

Observation

Sacrifice! This poor widow did not give 10% of what she had to the Lord, she did not give a tiny part of her surplus, she gave everything that she had to live on! When she walked out of that Temple she had given everything!

Jesus watched her do it! And I think that He smiled!

Courageous Generosity! A poor widow out gave everyone else!

I talked to one of our elderly recently who was concerned because she could not give as much as she used to give to our church. Her sick husband was being cared for full time in a nursing facility. She was taking care of everything now on her own. But her concern was about being faithful in her giving.

It is sad, but it is also very easy to overlook and ignore those faithful seniors who have given their lives serving Christ. Their sacrifice proportionately is huge, but we tend to favor the younger even if their sacrifice and their giving is a tiny part of their surplus! They spend most of their money on themselves, and give to the Lord a tiny part of their surplus. The size of their offering may be large, but in reality it is possibly just a tip.

Businessmen and women sometimes use their business to pay for many of their toys, their trips, and other kinds of luxurious perks! Sometimes for Christians in business it is just another way of giving less to the Lord. Maybe they don’t even realize it!

If you are in business it would do you well to read about this man, RG LeTourneau.

RG LeTourneau was a mighty man of God whose life continues to inspire Christians in Business to this day. RG and Evelyn LeTourneau were fond of remarking, “It’s not how much of my money I give to God, but how much of God’s money I keep for myself.” RG and his wife Evelyn gave 90% to the Lord and spent 10% on themselves. You can read about his life in the book, “Mover of Men and Mountains”. You can get it for $4.61 (Kindle edition) on Amazon. I am going to read it this week.

Application

I will look for ways to be more courageous in my giving. How about you?

Prayer

Heavenly Father, it is so easy for us to get caught up in the things of this world. You know it is for me. I pray for my young friends that are starting out in business. Don’t let them get caught up making money just to have more money. Bless them as they put You first. Bless them in business as they sacrificially give to further Your kingdom. Help me be a good steward of what You have provided us. Don’t let me misspend what is Yours. Give me wisdom and help me to be generous.
