“Stop!
Don’t Kill Yourself!
We Are All Here!”

Scripture

Acts 16

23 They were severely beaten, and then they were thrown into prison. The jailer was ordered to make sure they didn’t escape. 24 So the jailer put them into the inner dungeon and clamped their feet in the stocks.

25 Around midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the other prisoners were listening. 26 Suddenly, there was a massive earthquake, and the prison was shaken to its foundations. All the doors immediately flew open, and the chains of every prisoner fell off! 27 The jailer woke up to see the prison doors wide open. He assumed the prisoners had escaped, so he drew his sword to kill himself. 28 But Paul shouted to him, “Stop! Don’t kill yourself! We are all here!”

29 The jailer called for lights and ran to the dungeon and fell down trembling before Paul and Silas. 30 Then he brought them out and asked, “Sirs, what must I do to be saved?”

31 They replied, “Believe in the Lord Jesus and you will be saved, along with everyone in your household.”

Observation

The Bible is full of fascinating stories and this is one of my favorites! Take time to open your Bible and read this story today then close your eyes and just imagine that you are there in that jail when all of this happened. I can just feel the emotion!

It is midnight, but no one is asleep! Why, because Paul and Silas are praying and singing hymns to God and all the other prisoners are listening.

Severely beaten and placed into the inner dungeon with their feet clamped in stocks Paul and Silas rocked that prison with praise!

Suddenly there was a massive earthquake, all the chains on all the prisoners fell off and all the doors of the prison flew open, yet no one tried to escape!

Suddenly the jailor found himself standing on Holy ground, and fell down trembling before Paul and Silas.

He, the jailor, asked Paul and Silas, the prisoners, “Sirs, what must I do to be saved?”

There are so many lessons, so many powerful truths taught in this one exciting and totally awesome story. How many can you pick out?

Here are some that come to my mind at the moment:

  1. Sometimes bad things may happen to us so that others have the chance to see Jesus in us, giving them the opportunity to be saved.
  2. What you and I have to do to be saved is just what the jailor had to do – Believe in Jesus Christ!
  3. Our prayers and our praise can cause chains to fall off those around us and our God can set people free!
  4. You can add this one …. ____________________________________________.

1 Peter 2:9

But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.

Psalm 150
Praise the Lord!
Praise God in his sanctuary;
    praise him in his mighty heaven!
Praise him for his mighty works;
    praise his unequaled greatness!
Praise him with a blast of the ram’s horn;
    praise him with the lyre and harp!
Praise him with the tambourine and dancing;
    praise him with strings and flutes!
Praise him with a clash of cymbals;
    praise him with loud clanging cymbals.
Let everything that breathes sing praises to the Lord!

Praise the Lord!
