I Wasn't Talking About Unbelievers Who Indulge In Sexual Sin …
You Would Have To Leave
This World To Avoid People Like That.
Scripture
1 Corinthians 5
9 When I wrote to you before, I told you not to associate with people who indulge in sexual sin.
10 But I wasn’t talking about unbelievers who indulge in sexual sin, or are greedy, or cheat people, or worship idols. You would have to leave this world to avoid people like that.
11 I meant that you are not to associate with anyone who claims to be a believer yet indulges in sexual sin, or is greedy, or worships idols, or is abusive, or is a drunkard, or cheats people. Don’t even eat with such people.
Observation
The church at Corinth had lots of problems. One of the problems, among many, that the Apostle Paul addresses in this letter (and in a previous letter which we do not have) is the problem of sexual immorality in the church.
Evidently, a church member there in Corinth was openly living with and having sex with his own stepmother. Maybe this man's father had passed away. And maybe the stepmother and her stepson might have been close to the same age. We don't know any of those details. We do know that it was obviously wrong and the church wasn't addressing the issue.
The Christians who in the city of Corinth obviously lived in a very ungodly city and sexual immorality inside the church had become an issue that whether they wanted to or not it was an issue that had to be dealt with.
Sexual immorality in our churches today is a big issue. And like the church in Corinth, it is also an issue that has to be addressed.
I have the opportunity to talk with couples in our church who are presently living together and are not yet married. It is amazing to watch these couples as they grow in their relationship with Christ realize that this live-in relationship (which someone recently described to me as having a friend with benefits) is not what God intended for them.
And many of these couples begin meeting together with me for 'marriage preparation' classes and I encourage them to set a date (in the near future) for the wedding so they can get married.
Plain and simple all sexual immorality is wrong. It doesn't matter what the culture around our church accepts or says, it is always wrong for us as followers of Christ.
Application
I will help couples move towards marriage when I discover that they are just living with each other.
How about you?
Will you walk in sexual purity?
Prayer
Heavenly Father, it seems that people think that they can justify living ungodly while at the same time claiming to be one of Your followers. Help them walk in sexual purity. Help our couples make a marriage commitment to each other and a commitment to You to walk in purity. Don't let them miss out on life the way that You intended for them to experience it.
