You Have Seen My Troubles And You Care About The Anguish Of My Soul

You Have Seen My Troubles
And
You Care About The Anguish Of My Soul
Scripture
Psalm 31
1 O Lord, I have come to you for protection;
don’t let me be disgraced.
Save me, for you do what is right.
2 Turn your ear to listen to me;
rescue me quickly.
Be my rock of protection,
a fortress where I will be safe.
3 You are my rock and my fortress.
For the honor of your name, lead me out of this danger.
7 I will be glad and rejoice in your unfailing love,
for you have seen my troubles,
and you care about the anguish of my soul.
Observation

I think that the Psalms were placed right smack dab in the middle of our Bibles for a good reason – so we could find them easily and go to them often!

I find myself reading a Psalm or two almost every single day!

King David wrote most of the Psalms while hiding from his enemies and most of his Psalms were from a heart crying out to an all powerful God for help.
King David put his faith and trust in the Lord and that is exactly what you and I need to do!
David was a man after God's own heart!
Our internet in our house went out yesterday and a repairman is not scheduled to come out until next Wednesday so I have actually had to read my Bible, turning actual pages instead of clicking and scrolling down to read my next chapter. (I usually read my Bible from BibleGateway.com where I can make the font size really big!)
But yesterday and today I have been reading from a large print Bible that belonged to our special friend, Mrs. Barbara Smith. Barbara's family has allowed me to use her Bible in the 'Celebration of Life' service, at Swilley's Funeral Home next Tuesday at 1pm.
Friday, one week ago, she went to be with Jesus, her husband Ray and to be with lots of family and friends that got there first.
I love what she has written in her Bible at the top of Psalm 23, “The Lord is my Shepherd that's all I need!”
Barbara must have loved the Psalms because on almost every page you find something either circled, or underlined, or you will find a handwritten cross reference or a handwritten note scribbled in the margin on each page.
Acts 13:22
... God testified concerning him: ‘I have found David son of Jesse, a man after my own heart; he will do everything I want him to do.’
Psalm 34
4 I sought the Lord, and he answered me;
he delivered me from all my fears.
Psalm 37
23 The Lord makes firm the steps
of the one who delights in him;
24 though he may stumble, he will not fall,
for the Lord upholds him with his hand.
Psalm 46
1 God is our refuge and strength,
an ever-present help in trouble.
Application
I will take my burdens to the Lord because He cares about the “anguish of my soul”. How about you?
Prayer

Heavenly Father, You always do what is right. You are my refuge and my strength. You are an ever-present help in trouble. You will deliver me from all of my fears. You are my Rock and my Fortress. I will be glad and rejoice in your unfailing love, for you have seen my troubles, and you care about the anguish of my soul.

I pray for those who are grieving. You are the God of all comfort. Comfort them Lord. I pray for those who are in pain from an illness. Give them relief. I pray for those who are struggling with a broken relationship. Help them to depend and trust in You.

Seventy Years Are Given To Us! Some Even Live To Eighty.

Seventy Years Are Given To Us!
Some
Even Live To Eighty.
Scripture
Psalm 90
10 Seventy years are given to us!
Some even live to eighty.
But even the best years are filled with pain and trouble;
soon they disappear, and we fly away.
12 Teach us to realize the brevity of life,
so that we may grow in wisdom.
Observation
Life is short! This Psalm of Moses says that we are like the grass that springs up in the morning and is dry and withered by evening.
I can identify with this Psalm! Yes, life is very short!
Every day as I pray for those that are very sick I am reminded that life is fragile and life is very short.
You and I need to take advantage of “today”.
Even if you and I were to reach 90 or 100 years of age our lives would still seem to be very short! You have children, you blink your eyes, and you find that your children are all grown up and they are having their own children, they are raising their own families.
Where does time go? It flies by so quickly!
I will say it again … You and I need to take advantage of “today”.
The important things in life are not things at all, they are the people that surround us, not anything else!
Lord, teach me to realize the brevity of my life …
Application
I will invest my life in the people around me while I still have time to do it!
How about you?
Prayer
Heavenly Father, You know very well that I am getting closer and closer to Heaven all the time. My time on this earth is getting shorter and shorter. Teach me to realize the brevity of my life, so that I may grow in wisdom and not waste my time on stuff that does not matter to You.

I Have Put Before You An Open Door That No One Can Close.

I Have Put Before You

An Open Door

That No One Can Close.
Scripture
Revelation 3

“I know what you do. I have put before you an open door that no one can close. I know you are weak, but you have followed my teaching.

20 Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If you hear my voice and open the door, I will come in and eat with you. And you will eat with me.
Observation
Jesus was speaking to the seven churches in Revelation 3, but what He said to two of them can speak to our hearts today. To the church in Philadelphia He writes, “I know what you do. I have put before you an open door that no one can close. I know you are weak, but you have followed my teaching.”

Jesus does know what we do. He does know that we are weak. And yet He still opens doors for us that no one can close. He has in my life and if you are a Christ follower I am sure that He has opened doors for you too.

To the church at Laodicea Jesus says, “Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If you hear my voice and open the door, I will come in and eat with you. And you will eat with me.”

Jesus wants us to fellowship with Him. We have to open up the door of our heart for Him to come in. We must spend time with Him.
Listen … do you hear His voice … then open up the door of your heart and let Him come in! Don’t shut Him out!
Application
I will focus on the doors that are open in my life and not worry about the ones that seem closed. I will open up the door of my heart to Jesus and I will enjoy spending time with Him.
How about you?
Prayer

Heavenly Father, I don’t ever want to be lukewarm when it comes to my relationship with You. Don’t let it ever happen. Keep me away from sin that would mess up my relationship with You.
I pray for those going through difficult times today. I pray that You would be their strength. I pray that they would depend on You. I pray for healing. I pray that You open doors for those that are seeking to serve You. Those friends of ours that are looking for jobs and for those that are contemplating living in a different country to serve You, open doors for them. You are the God that opens doors that no one can shut. You are God All-Powerful! Nothing is too hard for You!

Our People Must Learn To Do Good By Meeting The Urgent Needs Of Others

Our People Must Learn To Do Good
By Meeting
The Urgent Needs Of Others
Scripture
Titus 3
14 Our people must learn to do good by meeting the urgent needs of others; then they will not be unproductive.
Observation
Doing good deeds, good works, meeting the urgent needs of others, although it is true that none of this helps me or you get into Heaven, it sure will help someone else see Jesus in us!
Ephesians 2:8-10, “For you are saved by grace through faith, and this is not from yourselves; it is God’s gift—not from works, so that no one can boast. For we are His creation, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared ahead of time so that we should walk in them.”
You and I are to be the “welcome mat” into the Kingdom of God - inviting others to come to faith in Jesus Christ.
Jesus Christ saved us not just so we get to go to Heaven when we die. No, Jesus saved us so that others might see Jesus in us, through the good works that He calls us to do.
Pastor Brian Elliott and Pastor Bruce Moore have both told us, “There are no random people in our lives.” God has strategically placed people in our lives so that they also have the opportunity to know Jesus as Lord and Savior.
Telling people about Jesus is important and absolutely necessary, but so is living a life of good works in front of them.
Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in Heaven.” Matthew 5:16
Application”
I will look for ways to help those who God has brought into my life.
How about you?
Prayer
Heavenly Father, help me to be a “welcome mat” and not a “stumbling block” to those that You bring into my life. Show me, prompt me, don't let me miss an opportunity to do something for someone else. I know that is why I am still here on planet Earth. Put on my heart the person that You want me to help.

My Heart Has Heard You Say, “Come And Talk With Me.” And My Heart Responds, “Lord, I Am Coming.”

My Heart Has Heard You Say,
Come And Talk With Me.”
And My Heart Responds, “Lord, I Am Coming.”
Scripture
Psalm 27
8 My heart has heard you say, “Come and talk with me.”
And my heart responds, “Lord, I am coming.”
Observation
What was the secret of King David's life?
The answer is pretty evident when you read what he penned in the book of Psalms. I love reading the Psalms and most of them were written by David. There are not many days that go by that I don't at least read one Psalm and today I read four!
David was a man after God's own heart. David didn't say that about himself, no, that is what God said about His servant David. Oh, if God could just say that about me!
As I read the Psalms I sense an intimacy between King David and God that I desire for my own life. How about you?
This morning I read in Psalm 57:7, “My heart is confident in you, O God; my heart is confident. No wonder I can sing your praises!” And listen to how David ends Psalm 27, “Wait patiently for the Lord. Be brave and courageous. Yes, wait patiently for the Lord.”
I know that your Mondays are probably pretty hectic, especially at this time of the year, but let's make time to quiet ourselves so we can hear God's voice say, “Come and talk with me.”
And when we hear His voice may our hearts respond just like King David's did, “Lord, I am coming.”
May this be the secret of our lives too!
Application
I will spend time talking with God this week. I will listen for Him to say, “Come and talk with me.” And I will say, “Lord, I am coming.”
How about you?
Prayer

Heavenly Father, help me to always be ready to respond to You when You want to talk with me. Give me a heart that hears Your voice. Give me a willing heart to obey what You say. Lead me along the right path and show me how to live my life in a way that pleases You.

You Keep Track Of All My Sorrows. You Have Collected All My Tears In Your Bottle. You Have Recorded Each One In Your Book.

You Keep Track Of All My Sorrows.
You Have Collected All My Tears In Your Bottle.
You Have Recorded Each One In Your Book.
Scripture
Psalm 56
8 You keep track of all my sorrows.
You have collected all my tears in your bottle.
You have recorded each one in your book.

9 My enemies will retreat when I call to you for help.
This I know: God is on my side!

10 I praise God for what he has promised;
yes, I praise the Lord for what he has promised.

11 I trust in God, so why should I be afraid?
What can mere mortals do to me?

Observation
This I know: God is on my side! Can you say that?
My friend, when doubts flood your mind it is a good thing to know that God is on your side. Trust me there will be days or nights where you will find yourself flooded with doubts and fear.
The enemy can't read my mind but he sure seems to be able to flood my mind with doubts. No, I don't doubt my salvation – I know that God has taken care of that issue. I know without a doubt that I am going to go to Heaven the moment I die.
No, the doubts that sneak into my head, especially during the middle of the night, are doubts about whether God will take care of us in the future.
Last night for instance, I was awake at 3:50 am and all kinds of thoughts were running through my big head and none of them helped me get back to sleep.
Where do these thoughts come from? They are sure not from my Heavenly Father.
Finally, I took control of those thoughts because I knew that my God wants me to trust Him and not be afraid. I really do know that my future is in His hands. I know that He loves me. He is on my side. So why should I be afraid? I know that He has always taken care of me.
So I will hold on to what King David said in Psalm 56! “I praise God for what He has promised, yes, I praise God for what He has promised. My God keeps track of all my sorrows. He collects all of my tears in His bottle. He has recorded each one of them in His book.”
Maybe this will helpful to you.
Application
My application comes from Psalm 56:3 “But when I am afraid, I will put my trust in you.”
How about you?
Prayer

Heavenly Father, I don't know why I bother to worry about anything. I do know that You are taking care of me. You have always taken care of me and I know that You will continue to take care of me. I know that fear is a lack of faith. Help me to always walk by faith and not by sight. So this morning I am holding on to all of Your promises. You are 100% faithful and You will keep each one of them. I pray for any person that may be reading this blog today. Help them to also walk by faith. Don't let them be afraid of what lies ahead. You are the good good Father. You know exactly what we need and what we don't.

My Problems Go From Bad To Worse Oh, Save Me From Them All!

My Problems Go From Bad To Worse
Oh,
Save Me From Them All!
Scripture
Psalm 25
16 Turn to me and have mercy,
for I am alone and in deep distress.
17 My problems go from bad to worse.
Oh, save me from them all!
18 Feel my pain and see my trouble.
    Forgive all my sins.
Psalm 55
16 But I will call on God,
and the Lord will rescue me.
17 Morning, noon, and night
I cry out in my distress,
and the Lord hears my voice.
Observation
King David had a lot of “terrible, horrible, no good, very bad days!
Maybe you and I can learn from him how to deal with life … especially when life clobbers us with one bad thing right after another.
I was talking to someone in my family yesterday and she has been dealing with health issues, one right after another, with no break.
It was a reminder to me that we are all going to have some “Terrible, horrible, no good, very bad days” and when we go through these trials, hardships, and difficulties we need to do exactly what King David did.
King David cried out to the Lord and he let the Lord know just how he felt. He then cried out to the Lord and pleaded for His help. His confidence was always in the Lord. And the Lord answered his prayers.
All of us have some prayer requests that we have been praying and praying and praying for and we have been waiting and waiting and waiting … but God has not yet answered our prayers. What should we do?
We should just keep praying … we should never give up!
Luke 18:1
One day Jesus told his disciples a story to show that they should always pray and never give up.
John 16:33
I have told you all this so that you may have peace in me. Here on earth you will have many trials and sorrows. But take heart, because I have overcome the world.
Application

I am praying for some folks who are going through some very tough times right now.
How about you?
Prayer

Heavenly Father, I pray for dear friends of ours whose Mother just passed away. We know that she is not suffering any more and she is now with Jesus. Comfort her family Lord as they go through this time of loss. I pray for a family member and a friend who are both going through difficulties with their health. I pray for healing.

Dear Children, Keep Away From Anything That Might Take God's Place In Your Hearts.

Dear Children,
Keep Away From Anything
That Might Take God's Place In Your Hearts.
Scripture
1 John 5
21 Dear children, keep away from anything that might take God’s place in your hearts.
Observation
What do you and I need to stay away from?
The Apostle John ends his letter with one final warning and this is a warning for all Christians - stay away from “any-thing” that could take God's place in our hearts!
Good things, even fun things – all have the potential to take God's number one place in our hearts.
Football season has arrived – it is okay to watch a game, but come on – do we have to miss church on Sunday, just to get out to the stadium early to tailgate?
Fishing and hunting, nothing wrong with those sports, but how easily they can ruin a marriage and a family when abused. When every weekend is spent either in the woods or out on a boat then we have let our love for the outdoors take the place of God in our hearts!
Any “thing” that takes us away from having God as number one in our life is an idol … it has become a god (notice the little “g”).
By the way, anything that takes God's place in my heart, also has the potential to destroy me and has the potential to destroy my family.
I minister to families every week whose lives have been shattered by a member of their family letting some “thing” take God's place in his or her heart.
So … let me ask … does any “thing” need to change? Does God have first place in our lives today?
Application
I will make sure that nothing in my life has taken God's number one place in my heart.
How about you?
Prayer

Heavenly Father, don't let me get so carried away with some “thing” that it takes Your place in my heart. Don't let me replace You with anything. I want to keep You number one in my life. I realize that Satan is always trying to distract me and he is always trying to trick me. He is always trying to get me to make something else in my life more important than You. Don't let him be successful.
I pray for anyone that may be reading this blog that has allowed his or her life to get out of balance. Help them today to put You first in their life again.

I Am The Lord, The God Of All The Peoples Of The World. Is Anything Too Hard For Me?

I Am The Lord,
The God Of All The Peoples Of The World.
Is Anything Too Hard For Me?
Scripture
Jeremiah 32
27 I am the Lord, the God of all the peoples of the world. Is anything too hard for me?
Observation

One of the many things that I love about Kathy is her belief in Eddy - yes - “me”. She actually believes that her husband can fix anything.

At least that is what she has been constantly telling me for the past 48, almost 49 years!

And even though I know that her belief is not even close to being true, just her saying that I can and her bragging on me all the time, it makes me feel like I can fix anything!

Kathy was taught by two very godly women: Dr. Clemmie Moore and Patsy Hartwig.

Among many other things they taught her to praise her husband rather than nag at him! Wow, I am so glad that she learned to do that early in our marriage!

But the truth is, even though Kathy makes me feel like I am a genius and a superman, there are plenty of things that I can't fix!

Oh, and by the way, Kathy also realizes that she is married to a sinner!

And she has learned to depend on God rather than on me to meet the deep needs in her life that only God can satisfy. Nobody knows better than Kathy that I am not God. She has seen me at my worst!

I say all of that to say this, “We serve a God who can fix anything!” And … He is the One who we must go to when things get impossible, because for Him nothing is “impossible”!

What are you facing today – take it to the Lord – because nothing is too hard for Him!

Application
I will take all of my impossibles to the Lord today.
How about you?
Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for bringing godly people into our lives when we first got married. Thank You for showing us early in our marriage that we had to put You first. Thank You for giving me such a wonderful wife. Help her to always believe that I can fix anything even though You and I know that I can't.
I pray for people that are struggling with impossible situations today. Help them to turn those impossible situations over to You.

For I Know The Plans I Have For You, Declares The Lord, Plans To Prosper You And Not To Harm You, Plans To Give You Hope And A Future.

For I Know The Plans I Have For You, Declares The Lord,
Plans To Prosper You And Not To Harm You,
Plans To Give You Hope And A Future.
Scripture
Jeremiah 29:11
For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.
Observation
What is God's plan for your life and my life? I don't know about your life, but my life hasn't gone exactly like I thought it would, and maybe yours hasn't either!
But I do know this, and I know it because I am one of God's children, God's plan is to prosper me and not to harm me, and I know that He plans to give me hope and a future.
Jeremiah 29:11 and Romans 8:28 go together like two peas in a pod, “And we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose for them.”
If we are followers of Jesus Christ then God even turns those bad things, those terrible things around for our good. You and I are going to experience bad things, we are going to experience pain and suffering, we are going to experience tragedy and loss, but God's promise is that He will turn even those bad things around for our good.
Our Heavenly Father is the good, good Father, and there is none other like Him.
Lets trust Him during the good times and the bad!
Romans 8
35 Can anything ever separate us from Christ’s love? Does it mean he no longer loves us if we have trouble or calamity, or are persecuted, or hungry, or destitute, or in danger, or threatened with death?
36 (As the Scriptures say, “For your sake we are killed every day; we are being slaughtered like sheep.”
37 No, despite all these things, overwhelming victory is ours through Christ, who loved us.
38 And I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from God’s love. Neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither our fears for today nor our worries about tomorrow—not even the powers of hell can separate us from God’s love.
39 No power in the sky above or in the earth below—indeed, nothing in all creation will ever be able to separate us from the love of God that is revealed in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Application
I will trust my Heavenly Father to take care of me. How about you?
Prayer

Heavenly Father, even though I don't know the exact plan You have for my life I do know that it is Your plan to prosper me and not to harm me. You have given me hope and I do have a future. I know that even when terrible things happen in my life, I know that you will turn those things around to somehow use them for my good.
I pray for those who are having surgery today. I pray for healing. I pray for those who are in the hospital recovering from surgery. Give them strength. I pray for those who are fighting life threatening illnesses. Don't let them give up. Heal them Lord.

The Craving For Whatever The Body Feels, The Craving For Whatever The Eyes See And The Arrogant Pride In One's Possessions -

The Craving For Whatever The Body Feels,
The Craving For Whatever The Eyes See
And The Arrogant Pride In One's Possessions -
Scripture
1 John 2:16
Everything that is in the world—the craving for whatever the body feels, the craving for whatever the eyes see and the arrogant pride in one’s possessions—is not of the Father but is of the world.
Observation
I guarantee you that you and I struggle on a daily basis with what is described in 1 John 2:16!
I don't care how good of a person that we think you are … you and I are sinners!
If we only watch television for a few minutes, turn a few pages in a magazine, look through a newspaper, look at the ads that pop up while we are on our computer, we will see and we will feel the pull of what is described in 1 John 2:16.
These evil desires—the craze for sex, the ambition to buy everything that appeals to us, and the pride that comes from wealth and importance—these are not from God. They are from this evil world itself.
Temptation comes from our own desires, which entice us and drag us away” (James 1:14).
You and I are being “enticed”, we are being tempted, we are constantly being bombarded from every direction to get us to satisfy a craving of our flesh. Satan wants us to take the bait! Satan wants us to give in to those fleshly desires.
1 Peter 4:8-9 says, “Stay alert! Watch out for your great enemy, the devil. He prowls around like a roaring lion, looking for someone to devour. Stand firm against him, and be strong in your faith.”
There is a “hook” in every craving – nobody ever starts out by saying, “Oh one day I want to be an alcoholic, one day I want to destroy my body, my life with drugs, or one day I want to ruin my marriage and my family with my addiction to pornography, no, it never starts out that way - does it?
Application
I will guard my heart. I will stay close to the Lord. I will confess my sins as I commit them.
How about you?
Proverbs 4:23
Guard your heart above all else, for it determines the course of your life.
Prayer

Heavenly Father, as I write this blog I realize that some time during the day today I will be tempted to satisfy a craving of my flesh. Give me strength to say no when that temptation comes my way. I know that You want me to guard my heart. Help me walk close to You today. Give me the ability to resist temptation when it comes. Help me to see it. Don't let me be enticed. Don't let me take the bait!
I pray for someone that is reading this blog today that is struggling with temptation. Help them to walk in sobriety. Help them to walk in victory today. It is a daily struggle. It is a day by day, moment by moment challenge for all of us. Give us victory today!

May His Face Smile With Favor On Us.

May
His Face
Smile With Favor On Us.
Scripture
Psalm 67
1 May God be merciful and bless us.
May his face smile with favor on us.
Observation
If there is one thing for sure that you and I need this week it is for God to smile on us!
If God does smile with favor on us this week it will only be because of His mercy and His loving kindness.
God is good. All the time!
You and I don't deserve God's kindness. We don't deserve God's love. We don't deserve His mercy.
Okay … how do we make God smile … how can we cause His face to smile with favor on us?
Actually, it is pretty easy – obey Him - put Him and His kingdom first this week … make Him and spending time with Him be our number one priority!
One of our young people (our church is full of young people!) told me yesterday while I was talking to her after church, “I came under conviction that I needed to get back to reading God's Word every day so I have started a 'read the Bible through in a year reading plan'.”
I know that her decision, her commitment to get back into God's Word made God smile! May God's face smile with favor on her as she faithfully does what she has promised God that she is going to do!
Being a man or a woman after God's own heart, that is what makes our God smile with favor on us!
What needs to change in my life this week, what needs to change in your life this week to cause God's face to smile with favor on us?
Numbers 6:24-26
24 ‘May the Lord bless you
    and protect you.
25 May the Lord smile on you
    and be gracious to you.
26 May the Lord show you his favor
    and give you his peace.’
Application
I plan to live out this week in a way that makes God smile.
How about you?
Prayer
Heavenly Father, help me live out this week in a way that makes You smile. Don't let me do stupid sins that mess up my relationship with You and that mess up my relationship with those around me. Help me to walk in obedience this week. Guide my steps. Keep me walking in the right direction.
I pray for any person that may read this blog. Help them to live out this week in a way that makes You smile. Numbers 6:24-26 is my prayer for them: “May the Lord bless you and protect you. May the Lord smile on you and be gracious to you. May the Lord show you his favor and give you his peace.”
