The Human Heart Is The Most Deceitful Of All Things, And Desperately Wicked. Who Really Knows How Bad It Is?

The Human Heart Is The Most Deceitful Of All Things,
And Desperately Wicked.
Who Really Knows How Bad It Is?
Scripture
Jeremiah 17
9 “The human heart is the most deceitful of all things,
    and desperately wicked.
Who really knows how bad it is?
Observation
You and I have a problem. Is it serious? Oh yes, it is very serious – dead serious! What is our problem? You and I have a terrible heart problem. Right now, you probably know of someone who is acting out – doing terrible things, things that you never thought that the person was capable of doing … yes it is shocking, but it also should be a reminder to us that the human heart unchecked is desperately wicked! Murder, adultery (cheating on your wife or your husband), rape, sexual immorality, fraud, pornography, lying, child abuse, spousal abuse, addictions of all kinds, etc. – yes, the human heart is beyond cure! You and I have the capability of committing all of those horrendous acts and a whole lot more if we let our hearts go unchecked. So what is the solution? How can we get help with this huge heart problem?
  1. Read and be in God's Word everyday:
How can a young person stay pure? … By obeying your word. I have hidden your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you.” Psalm 119:9-11
  2. Establish guardrails/boundaries for our lives:
Guard your heart above all else, for it determines the course of your life.” Proverbs 4:23
  3. Pray and confess our sins to God immediately:
How can I know all the sins lurking in my heart? Cleanse me from these hidden faults.” Psalm 19:12
Create in me a clean heart, O God. Renew a loyal spirit within me. Psalm 51:10
The sacrifice you desire is a broken spirit. You will not reject a broken and repentant heart, O God. Psalm 51:17
If I had not confessed the sin in my heart, the Lord would not have listened. Psalm 66:18
But if we confess our sins to him, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all wickedness. 1 John 1:9
Application
I will be in God's Word every day. I will maintain the guardrails that I have established for my life. And I will confess my sins as I commit them.
How about you?
Prayer
Heavenly Father, I am a sinner. I know that I am broken. My heart is capable of ugly, terrible things just like anyone else's. I pray for friends of mine who have neglected Your Word and who are now doing things that are so unlike the persons that I once knew. I know that sin does that to people. I pray for them. Turn them around Lord. Turn them around. Help them to walk in a close relationship with You again. Renew them – help them to repent! Save them from all of the heart break that is coming their way.
